This is an age of broadness and
liberality. The world has no place
for narrowness or prejudice, whether
it be in things social, political or re-
ligious.
Good mares are bringing good
prices in this section just now.
Good mares bred to good jacks
should produce good mules,and good
mules are always top price. We
can't see why the raising of mules
in the Panhandle wouldn't be about
as paying a business as the "kow"
business.—Higgins News.
B. C. D. Bynum, the manager of
Smith, Walker & Co.'s interests at
this place, left last Friday for a pleas-
ure trip to his old home at Horn
Lake, Miss. He ordered his home
paper, THS Brand, to follow him
during his absence, as he wants to
keep up with the events of this sec-
tion of the c-untry.
This one is told on an Amarillo
merchant: Mr. Blank was once a
prominent merchant at that place.
He had grown wealthy selling his
wares to the country folks round
about, and had done so by fair treat-
ment and a magnetic personality
which won him friends of all who
traded with him. Not infrequently
he would take his most prominent
customers out home to dinner when
they came to town. To this his good
wife strenuously objected, however,
and he invaribly heard unwelcome
things from her when the trouble-
some guest had departed. One day
Deacon Good came to town. Deacon
Good wan one of his best customers,
and he was particularly anxious to
keep his patronage.
'•Why, how are you, Deacon? Glad
to see you, sir, glad to see you."
And Mr. Blank gave the Deacon a
hand shake that made him fairly
wince.
After some conversation, Mr.
Blank said: "Well' I'm quite busy
this morning,—very important mat-
ter,—but you'll go out home with me
for dinner, eh? Wife'll be delighted
to see you."
•'Oh, I don't know," replied the
Deacon, "I guess I'd better go back
600n as possible."
But to this Mr. Blank wouldn't
listen, No, sir, wife'll never
forgive me for permitting you
to go back without going out to
see her. Just step to the 'phone there,
while I mail this letter, and tell her
that Deacon Good will be there for
dinner." After some hesitancy the
Deacon consented. Stepping up ta
the 'phone he called up Mrs. Blank
and tpld h?r tliat D:ac n(rood would

be there for dinner. Mrs. Blank,
thinking her husband was talking tj
her, very promptly replied :
"Mr. Blank, I just wen't cook-
dinner for that old hayseed. You
can just take him to the hotel. You've
got to stop bringing those old moat-
backs here for m-i to cook for and
make a slave of myself."
