EXPERIMENT STATION.
Col. A. G. Boyce is about to suc-
ceed in getting a U. S. experiment
station located at Channing.—Dal-
hart Sun.
An experiment station for the
plains is one of the things to be
looked forward to as a certainty
and will be of inestimable value to
the town securing its location.
Channing is a good town, and if
in the wisdom of those who have the
oversight of this department of Un-
cle Sam's business, is the proper
place for its location we should be
glad to note her success. Tho as
a matter of fact we feel that Here-
ford is the place for the location of
the coveted institution. Why? Be-
cause in the first place we have some
natural resources and conditions that
give us peculiar advantages over all
other plains towns. Therefore we
ought to investgiate the matter and
put our claims forward in such a
manner that will demand atten-
tion.
CHAUTAUQUA AGAIN.
The fact that our people had to
go to one of the churches Monday
night for the introductory faculty
recital demonstrates the wisdom of
our claims that we need a tabernacle
large enough and otherwise appro-
priate for such gatherings. True,
the College will soon be completed
and the chapel will afford ample
room for all College work, but for
several reasons is impracticable as
a meeting place for large gatherings.
Perhaps the time is not yet just ripe
for action in this matter but keep it
in mind and talk it up as one of the
things we must have ere another
year has passed away.
ABOUT ADVERTISING.
In buying the large plant of the
Brand and combining the two papers
the business interest as well as our
interest has been considered and we
do not expect to get the same
amount of advs for one paper that
each had in the two, yet we do ex*
pect something from every business
ia the town and will appreciate an
increase of from one-fifth to one-
third more than you carried in either
of the former papers. Our sub-
scription list offers the best field for
advertising, doubtless, of any paper
in this portion of the southwest.
Act on the suggestion.
THAT FLOURING MILL.
Not long since we suggested that
a flouring mill would prove a val-
uable acquisition to the commercial
interests of our town and the sug-
gestion met with considerable en-
couragement, so much, that we feel
inclined to press the matter just the
least bit.
With the increase in the yield of
wheat from year to year it doesn't
require a prophet to foretell that
such an investment would prove suc-
cessful. Let's take the matter up
in proper form and investigate the
merits of the matter. •
Advertise in the Searchlight and
get the advantage of more than a
thousand bonafide subscribers, which
according to the usual reckoning
(5 to 1) gives you five thousand
readers each week. Can you im-
agine a surer way to invest your
money for sure returns and larger
yields?
Winter is coming on and the risk
of being burned out is becoming
doubly hazardous, yet we have not
provided ourselves with anything,in
the way of fire protection. Let some
public spirited citizen, one or more,
take upon himself the responsibility
of launching some movement in this
direction that will prove helpful in
the way of protection.

Mr. Keller, the section foreman,
was called to Dallas this week to the
bedside of his mother, who is not ex-
pected to live.
Bob Billingsly, who has been liv-
ing with N. A. Laughlin for the past
several months, has accepted a po-
sition with Judge Witherspoon of
Hereford to work on a ranch north
of that place. He has experience
and will doubtless make a good
ranchman.
Rev. J. T. Burnett, who in the
near future will reside in Canyon
City, will preach at this place Sat-
urday and Sunday at 11 o'clock on
the 1st Sunday in October. The
Baptist church at this place has been
without a pastor for about 2 months.
Brother Burnett is supposed to take
charge of the work for the next
twelve months.
The literary school opened last
week wtth thirty four scholars. No
doubt but what we will have a first-
class school. It is expected to run
about 8 months.
We had a very nice shower of
rain last Friday evening which will
do everything some good and we
hope it will bring up the wheat that
has been sowed.
