Army Recruiter Assembles
Airplane in Spare Time
By BOBBIE BROHSSARD
Building an airplane is a real challenge for the aver-
age person—especially'when the person doesn't recoge
nize the name of parts being referred to in the manual.
Nevertheless, the job is being done by a local Army
recruiting officer and the step-by-step project i* being
performed according to re-
K- «T-—.-SI
$?. mm %
quired standards.
Why did he decide to un-
dertake such a project? Sgt.
Alton White decided he
wanted a four-passenger air-
plane and found the price was
too high. So he decided to build
one.
He currently Shas about $1.200
invested in the airplane and ex-
pects it to cost less than $1,500
upoo completion. He estimates
a second-hand airplane of this
type (a 1946 Stinson Station
Wagon) would cost about $3.500.
If it were purchased new it
would cost in the neighborhood
of $7,000.
He bought the disassembled
Stinson Station Wagon from sur.
vivors of a Conroe man who had
bought the airplane and disas-
sembled it before he died of a
heart attack.
Asked why its called a "sta-
tion wagon." Sgt. White laugh-
lingly replied, "It has t%ro
wooden sections on the doors. I
guess that's why the name." ■
White who is being assisted
by his brother, WiUard White of
Houston, has each step of the
project inspected by Ed Porgue,
owner and operator of Sky Har-
bor. and M. C. Eason. me-
chanic.
When White bought the air-
plane. it was only a frame of
tubing. He has upholstered the
seats in kelly green and white;
the frame is being covered with
a white cotton fabric and then
painted with 11 coats of Clear
Butyrate dope which gives it a
hard plastic finish.
Irish linen fabric, made in
similar fashion to a pillow case,
is fitted over the wings and
painted in the same manner.
Only the tail section and the
cowling over .the engine are
made of metal.
Both wings have been cov-
ered and are expected to be at-
tached today. He and his
brother have been working eve-
nings and weekends and hope to
complete the project by the end

of this month or early next
month. They began the project
on June 1.
White isn't sure how well the
motor will function because it
hasn't been run in about three
years. A protective substance
had been put in the motor to
preserve it.
It has a 150-horsepower mo-
tor with an anticipated speed
up to 12S m.p.h.,
White, in recalling past ex-
periences, said he had a two-
seater Piper Cub that was so
slow that cars on the highway
outran him.
Actually, he didn't sell the
Piper Cub because it was slow,
he explained/He sold it because
he is married and has three sons
and they all couldn't get in the
small airplane.
While White works on his air-
plane, his eldest son. Donnie,
works nearby on toy cars for
his friends. He also gives Dad
a helping hand if assistance is
needed.
White has been an Army re-
cruiting officer since March,
1959 and in the Beaumont-Or-
ange area since December, 1960.
He -and his family lived in
Bridge City before moving to
Orange in 1961.
On the Cover
An extra hand—his son's—
is available whenever Sgt.
Alton White needs' it in the
assembly of his airplane, but
meanwhile, Donnie is busy
repairing a toy automobile be-
longing to a neighborhood
friend.
On the cover of Spice! this
week Sgt. White is seen as he
fitted newly upholstered seats
into his airplane as his son
worked on* the car. The me-
chanical tendency appears to
run in the family: Donnie's
hobby is tinkering with me-
chanical toys. He may grow
up to build his own rocket
ship!
