Savs Dino of New Show:
WhenVIt Going To Be On?
HOLLYWOOD (Spl) - Loung-
ing on his mile-long sofa in his
paisley silk robe, Dean Martin
looked like anything but a fel-
low about to launch the first
weekly TV series he could call
his own.
He sounded even less so.
"That Dean Martin Show,' "
he began as he poured three
cups of coffee, "when's it going
to be on?"
A press agent took a deep
breath, then replied, "Thursday
nights on NBC-TV in color, pre-
miering Sept. 16 from 10 to 11"
(9-10 p.m. CDT).
"Hmmm," Dino' mused, "10
to 11, eh? I MAY stay up for
it. (He tapes his shows in ad-
vance). You think I'm kidding?
Look, I've made 33 movies. You
know how many I've seen?
Eight or nine.
"I've got things to do, man.
When I'm making a picture, I'm
busy. When I'm not making a
picture, I'm busier."
Dean plays gold seven days a
week, always with the same
foursome. Only one of them, ho-
tel scion Nicky Hilton, was in
show business and that was by
marriage — to Elizabeth Taylor.
Weekdays Dean toes off at 13:30
p.m., weekends at 7:30 a.m.
And he follows every round
with a game of gin rummy. "Ex-

body makes it so hard. It's pain-
less, like taking candy from a
baby."
Dean doesn't think his way of
doing TV is as good as the hard
way. He thinks it's better.
"I've done two shows al-
ready," be said, "and they're
both specials. Frank (that's Si-
natra), Diahann Carroll, Bob
Newhart and Joey Heatherton
are in the first one and John
Wayne, Peggy Lee, Jack Jones
and Shari Lewis are in the other
one and they're all great." So,
said the press agent, was Dean.
"And you know where I
learned my swigs? On the golf
course. My lines, too. I take
maybe 10 pages with me. I
hit the ball and while I'm walk-
ing, I sing and run
lines with my caddy.

If Dean weren't a fast study,
he'd have to play more golf,
considering the volume of ma-
terial that comes his way. In a
typical year, be makes at least
