The question of whether the sity
could legally compel oitizens to put
up numbers was raised and Created
oome oommeat among the members
ao were inolinedto diffar.
It was proposed that the city tack
np cheap tin numbers in a oonspiou
OUS place, and that Uie owners of the
houses be compelled to keep them
there until the class of number de-
sired be placed. .
Mr. Frank Wyrick stated that he
thought the numbers could be pro-
oured cheaply.
The following ordinance was plooed
oh its first reading by Alderman Qjyb-
We.
Be it ordained by the city council
of the city of Sherman)
seo. 1—That it shall be, and is
hereby made the duty of every per-
son owning any business house or
dwelling house within the corporate
limits of the city of Sherman, to oause
tbo same to be numbered by placiog
in some conspicuous place on the
front thereof, the proper numbers to
be furnished by O. F. Wyrick,
Sec. 2 —That auyone who
shall fail or refuse to
have bis or her'house numbered
according to the plans adopted by the
City council of the city o) Sherman
for a period ot five days after notifica-
tion by the oity secretary to number
the same shall be deemed guilty of
a misdemeanor, and on conviotion
shall be fined not less than one nor
more than five dollars.
Seo. 3—Nothing herein shall be so
construed to pf-evont anyone from
numbering bis or her house, or from
employing anyone whomsoever to
number the same
Sec. i—The owner of any house
sbaU have the right to determine the
substanoe or material of which such
number shall consist when the num
bering is done by such owner.
Seo. 5 —That this ordinance take
effect from and after ten days publi
cation. '
The rules were suspended, and by
a unanimous vote the ordinance, as
rend, was adopted.

Word was brought into the council
chamber yesterday afternoon, during
the session, regarding the Leslie mi's
bap on one of tho city's bridges, near
the corner of Branch and Lamar
street?. Mr. Lftng, who was at the
cotton gin, near by, when the accident
oconrred, was called upon for a version
of the affhir as an eye witness, and
said:
"I was standing near by when it
occurred and saw it. Mr. Leslie was
riding along at a moderate rate of
spoed, and onu of his horso's feet
broke through a plank and threw
him of£ the horse falling on bim and
inflioting the injury to his arm. The
plauk is about tbo third or fourth
from the east end. Lamar streot
upon which the bridge is situated, is

Pending tbe discussion Alderman
Hall said that be believed that the
oity should employ a street commie
sioner aud have bim devote bis atten-
tion to the streets, and
tbe sentiment of tbe people
who are becoming heartily sick
of damage suits is just tbo samo way.
Sherman bos now about sixty miles
of strsets and alleys, and on tbis
long stretch of thoroughfares thoro
are at least one hundred culvorts
and street bridgee; any of which is
liable to furnish the scene of an oojí

this fact Alderman Hall was right.
