The Menace
You've been a Maverickin', an' I ketched you red hand,
'Cause I knowed hits ears an' tail if you had run the brand.
Now, that aint quite square, when Larry is in the ground,
Whar he cant watch out when Maverickers is prowlin' round.
An' if he wus alive,-well, it would be a "hangin' bee."
Leastways, that's the way they'ed done it back in '83.
Cow-rustlers knowed in advanc' thar wus a rope an' tree,
Fur justice wus fairly quick an' sartin back in '83.
Them days he branded just his'n; you bet he never guessed!
An' of all the times I've seen them wus the very best.
But say, times hes changed a mighty heap since then!
The rope an' tree is out'er date an' no one fears the "Pen."
Tho, if Larry wus well an' healthy an' his friends had'nt a
died,
You'de hey to hit the timber, or cross the Great Divide.

TO THE DOCTOR I'LL NEVER KNOW.
Here is a toast I want to drink to a fellow I'll never know,
To the fellow who's going to take my place when it's time
for me to go.
I've wondered what kind of a chap he'll be and I've wished
I could take his hand,
Just to whisper, "I wish you well, old man," in a way he'd
understand.
I'd like to give him the cheering word that I've longed at
times to hear,
I'd like to give him the warm handclasp when never a
friend seems near.
I've learned my knowledge by sheer hard work, and I wish
I could pass it on,
To the fellow who'll come to take my place some day when
I'm gone.126
