promptly followed by a newspaper
report that the priee Nicaragua
would set upon her concession
wonld be $5000000 cash and an
annual groanu rent. JNo one is
quoted as stating this figure but
the publication bears some signin
cant ear marksand $5000000 aLd
an annuity may be safely accepted
as Nicaragua's asking price.
It is understood that the execu-
tive branch of the government is
preparing to negotiate treaties with
Nicaragua and Costa fiica. for the
purchase of the desired franchise.
New York November 20. It
was reported in Washington says
a special to the Herald that bur-
glars who were after the forthcom-
ing report of th& Walker isthmian
canal commission had entered the
Corcoran building in which the
commission has its offices and had'
broken open the desk of Lieuten-
ant Commander Stanton secretary
of the commission.
The report of the commission is
being very closely guarded and it
is said some of the commissioners
are not yet acquainted with what
the report will contain.
The best information obtainable
at Washington is that the com-
missicrn certainly by a vote of
five to four and possibly by six
to three will recommend the
Nicaraguan ronte. This is based;
npon several inferences as well as
well as upon statements from the
commissioners themselves.
It is said that President McKin-
ley has received sufficient infor-
mation about the report for use in
his message. The message if in
Jine with the rumor will advocate
the adoption of the Nicaraguan
route the. ratification of the Hay-
Pauucefote treaty the construction
of a eaual without fortification-
aud the adoptiou of tolls discrimi-
nating in favor of the Uuited
States Costa Rica and Nicaragua
only so far as coastwise vessels
are concerned and leavihg the
canal open to all the shipping of
the world
Final estimates of the cosfc of a
Nicaraguan canal have not yet been
completed. The engineers are
still working upon the figures.
Approximate figures of the cost of
the Nicaraguan canal are believed
to be about $150j000000. The com
mission will resume its sessiou in
Washington on laes3ay and re-
