October 2004
ay is a Hit
School Competes in Charity
Softball Tourney
Fostered by the com-
petitive nature of
law students and friendly
rivalry between Houston's
three law schools, some 40
teams of not-exactly-pro-
fessional softball teams
took to the fields of Me-
morial Park on Saturday,
October 2 for the second
annual Triple Play softball
tournament. Organized by
the student organizations
of all three schools, the
day-long, 55-game com-
petition generated a dona-
tion for the Houston Area
Women's Center of over
$4,000.
South Texas
fielded 11 teams with the
South Texas Shockers
making it all the way to the
championship game. The
final game was against
Hendricks Sports Manage-
ment, a team that marched
over its challengers all day
without remorse. The last
game was their toughest of
the day with the South
Texas Shockers giving
them a run for their money
for a final score of 18-11.
For the second year, a non-
student team came in and
conquered for a good
cause.
**I am truly im-
pressed with the organiza-
tion, the atmosphere and
the liveliness of the tour-
nament," says South Texas
President and Dean James
Alfini. 'There was excite-
ment on every field-what
a great event." Alfini's
team, the Alfini Avengers,
didn't do so well, but he
vows to have an improved
team next year.
Sponsorships of the com-
petition underwrite some
of the expenses and keep
costs low for participating
teams and included:

Boyar & Miller, P.C.

The task of orga-
nizing the Triple Play tour-
nament falls mainly on
South Texas as the school
that originated the compe-
tition last year under the
direction of Student Bar
President Joe McMullen.
The majority of the work
was done by the Triple
Play Charity Softball
Tournament Committee
and Student Organizations
Coordinator Amy
Kavalewitz. (Quote from
Joe)
The organizing
committee included Tim
Ross, Lindsey Mitchell,
McMullen from South
Texas, Allison Gerzman
from Thurgood Marshall
and Steven Kolos from the
University of Houston.
