pedo boats and a large expenditure for

These cruisers are to be the main
rellnnce of the Navy. Their features
are swiftness anil the poner or their

done In the Navy yards by the govern-
ment or by contract nnd both plans

ordnanco work will be done In the yards
aad most. If not all will be dune at

equipped. The committee will recom-
mend a perfect torpedo system. The
committee do not favor the construction

Assaulted by Mormons.
Salt Lake February 23. At 7 o'olock
last evening as United States Attorney
Dickson was leaving the dining-room of
the Continental Hotel some men asked
to see hi in at the outer dsor. He went
when one of them struok him In the

others aiding. Judge Towers and Major
Krley landlord of the hotel thinking
the action of the men peculiar followed
and got to the door lust after Dickson
had been struck by Frank Cannon ion

August Cannon when searched was

Early yesterday morning nearly all the
Chinese In Oregon City 13 miles south
of Cortland were ruthlessly driven out
of town I hey were awakened by a

their persons stolen. They were then
escorted to the steamboat J.atena. lying
at the wharf placed abroad her and
brought to this city their fares being
paid out of the money stolen. Forty-
two Chinese In all were driven out.

Woolen Mills which also employs about

are known and Chinese merchants here
say they will make an effort to have

Galveston February 23. The Kvan-
Eellsts Moody and Sankey closed their
three days' meetlngi In thli city to-night
another very largo audience greeting
them. Nearly 100 converts stood up at
the call of Mr. Moody to-night causing
him to express grotlrloatlon at bis labors
hero. Kvery meeting both afternoon
and night has been well attended. They
leave for Houston at 7 o'clock to-morrow
morning where meetings will be held for
three dayi. Extenilve preparations have
been mode for their reception at Hout-
