Tho Pope's Address.
JtoMK March 2. Pope Leo XIII. cele
brated the 7'th anniversary of Ids blrlh
to-day and Ihe Sib nnnlveMary of his
coronation which falls to-morrow by
an address to tne members of the sacred
college. In this Ills Holiness eulogized
the union existing among the cardinals
and urged concord among Catholic
against lhne seeking to corrupt and
weaken the authority or the Church.
Ho dctdored the oppres-ed condition of
the Holy See as unworthy or the head or
the Church and as Incompatible with his
Independence. HI Holiness spoko with
much severity concerning the attempt to
connect the Vatican with the crime or
furnishing the foreign enemies or Italy
with secret Information about Its mili-
tary defense as win done recently In the
case of a man on trial on the charge or
having sold such Information to a foreign
power. During Ids trial the prosecution
read what purported to be a letter from
Vienna In which (lie writer whote
name wa withheld. Imputed Ihe present
act tu Inspiration from the Vatican
which was nccuted of having a purpose
to undermine and destroy the present
kingdom or Italy Ills Holiness re-
pelled this imputation with indignation
and condemned the Impuulty with which
vulgar malignity or this kind lina been
employed against the Vatican.
The Strike.
Four Woiirn March 2.A special to
the Kxprcaa nys: The one subject or
conversation among all classes I the
strike. The yard or the Missouri Paci-
fic and Texas Pacific arc descried with
the exception of two or Hire umn who
however II ml their occupation gone.
Vardmaster July succeeded tn getting
out two through freight train to-day
and a third train made up chiefly of
empty cars. The striker otTercd no op-
position to this move.
When the order camu to the ICulghts
or Labor In Assembly No. 101 to "go
out" they went at one and as soon us
possible gave notice to the telegraph
operator to the number of 10 who are at
work In tho railway ofllce that all
Knight engaged In railroad work were
expected to leave their work whereupon
the Manager and all the operator but
one closed their keys and walked out.
The operator any they have no griev-
ance of their own at this time but that
the allegiance duo by them to t'le order
left them no other course buttottand
by their brethren. A general
impression wa that while freight
trslllc might bo blocked passenger
trains would continue to go through
and the express companies would be
able to till the urgent necettltle of mer-
chants ror retail articles but when It is
known tbat the section men aro in the
ttrlke and are out to a man and the
furiher fact Is considered that the con-
stant rain for the past few days have
put the track and road-bed In bad con-
dition in many places It will be seen
that ;it will soon be hazardoua to at-
tempt to run passenger trains. Under
the existing state ofallalr tho railroad
oftlcial receive no freight.
Superintendent Llttlelleld arrived here
to-night from Marshall with live tele-
graph operators to take the place of
the men who arc out. One through
freight train wa permitted to go south
on the Missouri Paclllo to-night. Gov-
ernor Drown one of the receiver has
ent word here that the men must go
back to work Thursday or all would be
discharged.
At Marshall and Dig Springs ends of
dlviilont the men are all out. At other
points they have not yet quit work. The
railroad official! know nothing of tho
cause of the trouble and the Knight
will not talk.
