"Mr. Preller was suffering from a nrl

prescribed mixing the medicine myself
from bottles In tbe medicine case 1
carried with me. But bis ailment bad
reaobed a stage when It was necessary
for me to make certain Investigations. I
was obliged to use the catheter anil
using the catheter when tbe parts were
Inflamed 1 bad previously applied chlo-
roform In order to produce a condition
ol narcotism. I used chloroform In this
manner on a man named llavuson In
Llveruool. without anv serious result f
explained the process to Preller and told
him what I should have to do. He was
not only willing but was very anxious
for ma to treat him In this manner.
During the day I purchased four ounces
of ohloroform which was standing In a
bottle on tbe edge of my washstand
wben I was washing some surgical In-
struments. This washing of Instruments
took dace on Sundav afternoon and was
Intended as a preparation for tbe opera-
tion in washing tbe Instruments I over-
turned tbe bottle of chloroform and it
went headlong -Into the basin tbe cotk
coming out and all but an ounee and a
3uarter or an ounca and a half going
own In the sink. This was probably 3
o'clock and after getting my Instru-
ments ready I went out to seoure some
more chloroform I went to a drug
store. I don't know where but to a
store near the hotel and asked for chlo
roform. The clerks or some persons
there have said I was excited and In a
hurry. This was not so. I rat down In
a chair In the druir store for more than a
quarter of riti hour. I was very leisurely
about ray business for there was no
hurry if I am not mistaken I had a
long conversation with some one In the
urug store when l got tbe cniorororm
1 repaired to my room. Preller bad been
In anil out of my room and his own all
the afternoon. About C o'clock we be
gan the operation. I ndmlnlsterod the
chloroform In the usual way holding a
saturated cloth to the nose. Preller
passed through tbe first stage all right.

exactly how long. Then he entered the

ror when this fact dawned upon
I was wild with fright but bad
presence of mind enough to cut the
shirt anil undershirt from the body
and getting a wet towel 1 bathed him
around the neck and shoulders for half
an hour or so. I didn't give up until I
was ready to drop from exhaustion. My
eflorts wero not relaxed until be bail
been dead tome lime. All the clothes
he had on at the time were a shirt and
undershirt. I hau stripped him for the
operation. What did I do when I saw
my friend was dead? I didn't know
what to do except to drink. I drank
everything 1 could get wine whisky
everything. What were my thoughts?
1 hadn't any. All I remember Is that I
drew on a pair of drawers the tlrst that

What was done besides this 1 have no
recollection of. Liquor and consterna-
tion had possession of me and 1 know

which the remains were found. It
would be useless for me to say that I
slept for I didn't and I was glad wben
morning came. What I did after leaving
the room you knows for It has all been
printed."
