committee on ways and means to-day
reported back adversely the bill to carry
Into effect the commercial treaty with
Mexico. The majority report says tho
provisions of the treaty. If enaoted
would within a few yenrs utterly destroy

The report also declares the exchange of
free articles enumerated by the treaty
bears very heavily and almost exclusively
on the agriculturalists ot our country
as products of the soil and pasturage

ton woolen silk and linen manufactures
are wholly Ignored In the treaty Mex-
ico retaining this trade to herself.

A special called meeting of the city
school board was held yesterday after-
noon In the office of the superintendent
of schools In theclty hall. The object
or the call was to arrange some method
to dismiss the various grades beginning
by the 1st of June and the superintend-
ent was empowered to b.gln closing
the schools about the 1st Inst. and says
ho will begin by the examination of
firade No. 1 In the High school dlsmlss-
ng each grade as examined.
A petition was also received from sev-
eral teachers requesting that the rule
providing for sickness of teachers be
amended so as to allow a sick leave or
live days to teachers Instead of a lesser
number ns heretofore provided. The
petition was accordingly granted.
It was unanimously decided that a
general holiday be given the schools on
