an end to the performance and tbe cur-
tain was drawn down. The manager
then came to tbe front of tbe stage and
begged that If there was a doctor In the

the lady was restored to consciousness

begged to know the name of her pre-

she read In confusion "Padre Jean

Allow me to say something about that
controversy now being bad about "home
Industry."
This so-much abused term of home In-
dustry Is a grand Insult to society.
Now to facts regarding the line Star
brewery and Its llrst beginnings. Hav-
ing an eye to the future In 1S7U acquired
Mr. II. Barbeck and myself ownership
of a plot of ground upon which tho I-one
Star urewery Is now located. Through
the llrm of BlafTer A Co. at Houston
which was In reality a branch of Hoppe
A Son of St. Ixiuls I got recommenda-
tions to E. F. Hoppe and In visiting St.
Louis an evil destiny led mo to E. F
Hoppe direct. My plans were unfolded
to him regarding the irunoed undertak
ing. 1 requested to be shown tho
smallest brewery Its capacity of produc-
tion and fair cstlmato of expenses
per year In order to make cal-
culations for an establishment
to cost about 11 ft v or sixty thousand dol
lars wblob;ehouid be owned by threo
and possibly not more than four Individ-
uals only.
During a sojourn or ten days In the
city or St. Louis 1 visited all the Brew-
eries big and little. Tho result was.
mat i pledged myseir ror iuuuu and
Mr II. Barbeck as per previous agree-
ment lor the same amount as the funda
mental start of a "home Industry." In
tbe mean time the "Southern Brewery"
at New Orleans had been started In
name became "non est" unon tho rol
that corporation whereupon that gen-
tleman wrote me a six page letter re-
garding our undertaking and advising
me to get up a siock company. At tnis
time another evil genius brought me In
contact with Messrs. Berg Kampmann
and others and a stock company was
formed; tbe llrst meeting of which
waa held at the hall of tire
engine house No. '2 on which occa-
sion a keg of beer was opened from the
Southern Brewery of New Orleans that
had been cooled In my Ice box. The
capital stock which according to former
estimates was toleU0000 was at once
Increased to 100000. The next day tbe
board of directors empowered Mr. Hop-
pe with absolute franchise to go abroad
and llnd tbe best machinery purchase
same and shin to San Antonio for "Home
Industry." Now I want the people or
Texas to know bow this all was accom-
plished. The "absolute power Invest-
ment" traveled north and east to a
dozen or more cities and did not llnd tbe
"best" machinery until he returned to
St. Louis where be discovered that the
Empire Foundry In that city had the
linest machinery In the land. Here It
should be read between lines that 1 bad
at tbat time Information that the
gentleman waa a prominent stockholder
In that foundry.
Tbe much-worn traveler after all
these exertions was offered a bonus
from tho Kmplro foundry of 1 100 (I.e.
commission) which was tendered to the
directory with "1 make this a present
to "Home Industry' " as an Impetus for
starting. And when upon the next
meeting of the directory this bonus
fcommfsilon) was presented to that
body tbe late Mr Kampmann remarked
"See how honest that man Is." Tho so-
quel will show It.
Being opposed In every way and sat
down upon In every proposition I ad-
vertised my stock for sale in such a man-
ner tbat tbe satellites of tbe new man-
agement came lo my establishment and
bought my stock at par getting a dollar
for every dollar or race value.
Again and hereby bangs a tale 1
made a claim ror the sum of live hun-
dred expended In neoessary expenses
Incurred In traveling and arranging all
firellmlnarles ever since 1880 which was
gnored by the dlreotory and manage-
ment. The parallel Is tbat Mr. Hoppe who
was the second nay even only the
third party In the original enterprise
got a square $0000 for his useless trav-
