A BIT OF HUMAN NATURE.
BT PATTO CtlniSTIB uunnAT.
Clil Iiutig had smoked lila clsnr to tlio last
halMnch and opening the door of tliostovo
ho dropped the remnant of It Into tho Are.
"Is that a sign?" said Iwrcnce with a
dreary laugh. "All over? And tho last
spark to he thrown away? Very well. Good-
night old lad eood-nlirhL" lie pat to. I Chi
Luue on the shoulder and walked toward
tho uoor. It w m hal f-open and there was a
rustle ou the stair. Tho lamps wcro lit In
the corridor already and he throw opon the
door In time to see Olivia with the tray In
both her hands gliding round the corner.
Ilad sho heard? he asked himself with
horror. Of course she had heard. And what
could she think except that this was the
basest and most shameless of conceivable
Impostures? Tho stupidest as well as the
basest. Ho stood rooted to the lloor and ho
groaned. '
Ho remembered now that he had heard
the mounting step on the granary stairs.
There was no other like It In tho house. To
pretend that he had not known It from
Suictte's Suzette was a woman of twelve
stone and wore sabots 1
To leave Olivia with tuch ait Impression
as this was maddening. To let her think
that he had laid such a burlesque trap for
her was horrible. And nho could believe
that a man could talk aloud of the secrets of
his heart to a heathen who could not com-
prehend a word?
Perhaps It was natural for Lawrence to
think thus but as a matter of fact no such
suspicion as he feared entered Olivia's pret-
ty head for a moment. She ran back Into
the kitchen through which she had pass-
ed a minute before set Chi Lung's soup up-
on a dresser and hastened to her own room
before she gavo herself time to think about
anything.
"The sweetest maiden under tho bluo
skies. The loveliest and tho best To go
away Into the outside darkness and per-
haps never to see her again. To go away
without even saying 'I love you.' That's
hard."
She had hoard as much as this and really
and actually she could not help hearing so
much. It was not that tho tone was loud
for the words were spoken with a slow re-
gretful tremulous softness. Hut the sur-
prise had held her there and for a minute
she had not the power to run away. Agiin
and again she hid her face In her hands
though she sat alone In her own room and
almost In darkness. 8I10 told herself It was
absurd ridiculous vain to think he meant
the words for her but all the same she knew
for whom he meant them.
Lawrence also sought the silence and soli-
tude of his own chamber though ho scarce
knew how he got there. When tho hour
came to descend to supper he would almost
as willingly havo walked to hU execution.
A young man given to exaggerating things
you will observe.
If he had distinctly framed a picture of
Olivia ai be expected to meet her he would
have seen a youthful goddess frozen with
disdainful contempt. But she met him In
no wise In that manner. She had loit the
frank candor of her eyes. She blushed.
There was something so exquisitely .oft
and tender In her air that he had never seen
the like and his heart ached at her beauty
and her sweetness. From her opposite side
of the table the looked at him and her eyes
drooped the color mantled on her cheek
her brow. Her very ears and neck were
rosy red. Theso were no signs of anger and
contempt She had heard. Sho could not
havo escaped hearing. But sho had under
stood and she was pleased.
The dear old maiden lady wasaulte dis
turbed by the poor appetite the young peo
ple displayed.
CHAPTER VII.
Chi Lung felt that bis pains were over
and found his strength returning. He began
naturally to think about the future. Now
that he was getting better people pushod
him about a little and he was no longer
waited on as be had been In. a little while
they would put him to the door. So be be
gan to pilfer with admirable adroitness and
nicked una nurooer or unconsidered trincs.
But one great project fired his heart and
aoul and occupied his Chinese Intellect for
days. Like other projects conceived by
greater men this scheme of Chi Lung's had
a serious hold In It His Idea was simply to
become possessed of Arthur Lawrence's
pocket-book the little leathern case which
held all that prodigious wealth he had seen
in the hotel at Montcourtols. A piece of
paper ne rememDercd clearly was converti-
ble Into a little handful of vellow nieces.
each of which was worth four great white
nieces each of which In turn was eaual to a
hundred small white pieces. The thrice-
Diessea possessor or tnose pieces of paper
was rich for lite. Tie could drink as much
comforting colorless liquid In whleh these
outer barbarians rejoiced as ever he pleased.
Jlo could smoko endlessly. He could have
cnouch to cat always.
It did not occur to Cht Lung that the at-
tempt to transmute ono of those maglo
pli CM of piper Into gold wontd Infallibly
bring him within tho clutches of the law. It
dM not occur lo him that escape with tho
pocket-book was a pure Impossibility. It
did not even occur to him that In the cir-
cumstances his project was open to the
cli irgo of being a trifle shabby.
Ho experienced In tho contemplation of
his plan the glow natural to tho Inventor of
a gi cat idea ; ami it ansorDcd an nu thoughts.
much t.tnrenco laiKen to him uni Lung
always looked out for the sign it Hie picket-
book's presence and his yellow fingers
woultl Itcn and tingle and Jump as he
thought of tho trcasuro tho simple oblong
protrusion of thn cloth of the coat Indicated.
When ho walked about tlieehnteau In tho
wintry sunshlno ho was keen to discover
Lavtronco's chamber and It was not long
before tho young man nodded at htm from
a window. After that ha looked for him
regularly there and Lawrence ln.hls West-
cm mind got to fancy that tho Oriental
liked him anil would taka tho trouble to
open tho window In alter him nterbal sa-
lute. Thero wcro two doors lo Cht Lunir's gran
ary chamber and ono of lliem was secured
on tho Inside by two bolts which shot Into
rings firmly driven Into tho door-post.
witnoramng mesa bolts which were rusty
with long disuse ho discovered thatthodoor
opened upon a stout permanent ladder with
ananu-rau running down ono sluoot it
The top step of this ladder had rotted away
but tho rest wcro still sound enough to bear
a man of his weight llu ascertained this
fact practically and onco or tnlco at night
whon the door which communicated with
the corridor was locked and tho houso was
plunged In silence ho hod got down Into
the open and had prowled about tho build-
ing to consider burglarious ways and means.
On one occasion ho had ventured out too
early and had been compelled to hide from
the people who wcro still moving about
Ho had no means of ascertaining the hour
and In his lonely waiting was likely to over-
estimate tho rapidity of tho flight of time.
When Lawrence left him It was barely.dusk
outside but In Clil Lung's chamber It was
dark. In the high windows tho sky glim-
mered white for a long time after the En-
glishman's departure nnd Clil Lung lay up-
on his bed nnd watched It as It slowly dark-
ened. When It had grown so somber that
he could scarcely see tho window bars against
It somebody brouiht him his sotm. au to
cold by this time a liberal hunch of bread
nud a lamp. Ho felt that ho had aforetime
bein treated with greater consideration.
The difference between hot soup and cold
was more than a inherence or temperature
to his mind. Tim cold soup meant cold wel
come.
Ho w as niille lit lo set out unon his travels
again nnd lieexpictcd to receive his march-
ing orders very boon. Inthemeaullmecould
ho by nny means secure that gold mine of a
pocket-book? Ho burned and Itched and
nched lo be at It to havo It In his fingers.
He had no moro compunction conscience
foresight or reflection than a kleptomanlao
ape would havo had.
'llio night hav ng arrived when ho con
cluded to possess himself of Lawrence's
pocket-hook ho drew back the rusted bolts
nnd stole down the mildewed steps outside.
The night was 111 led with moonlight and
was extremely silent and when ho had crept
cautiously round tho front of tho Chateau
he saw two lights ono In the open doorway
of tho hall and tho other a dozen yards
nearer to him In that ground-floor chamber
In which Olivia and Arthur had been used
to sit at their painting. Moving with ex-
treme slowness and caution lie crouched
along by tho wall until lie was beneath this
Illuminated window and then c aw Inz the
cold sill with both yellow hands ho lifted
ills nead and peered Into tho room. It was
empty as far as he could see. He peered
and crouched Holding Himself In readiness
to duck. It necessity should arise. All on a
sudden the very passion of greed illumin-
ated his face and ho arose and stood up-
right unconsciously. The pocket-book he
knew It again ho was certain of It lay up-
on tho tablo. He did not lose all his fears
or all his caution but this unexpected sight
of the prize made him bold and he shook
tho window to see If It were fastened. It
tens fastened but It was rickety beyond be-
lief In n houso generally so well appointed
and when ho laid a stronger hold upon It
and pulled at It with both hands it yielded
perceptibly with a sound as of rotten wood
tearing apart Ho ttifrgcd again and again
until what with luseiiuits and emotions. tho
sweat stood upon his forehead and his gar-
ments clung damply to his limbs. Sudden-
ly tho widow gave way and ho fell back
ward on the grass but recovering himself
at once glared right and left and with a
Seating heart climbed Into the room and
with a slnglo stride clutched the book.
At that second a voice fell upon his car.
and qulck.is thought he blew out the lamp
and falling on his hands and knees crawled
to the window and peered Into tho moonlit
night Ho could see nothing but he could
hear steps approaching on the firm carriage
drlvo of beaten schist He stretched out a
hand on either side and druwthe folding
windows close. Half a minute later In the
broad solemn light two figures came Into
view nnd ho knew thcin for those of Law-
rence and Olivia.

ue nao need neither 01 ioodnor wine just
then. He was content when ho could steal
a glance at her. As for Olivia that strange
gaze which had so strangely affected her
had ceased to bo a puzzle. It needed no
translation for she herself bad learned the
language In which It spoke. Her heart also
had an Inward song of Its own. "The
sweetest maiden under tho blue skies. The
loveliest and tho best" His thoughts of her.
When supper was over she escaped from
the room and a littlo while later Lawrence
escaped also.
"It is a lovely night" ho said I than
walk for a littlo while."
"I hope you will return with a recovered
appetite" said the old lady. "When you
come back you shall havo a little supper laid
out for you. you have esten nothing."
ijawrcnco protested gayiyagamstascconu
supper and took his way. He ran down
me Droad oaten stairs eager ror the open
air and to bo alone with his new hopes and
fancies. When became to the roomy en
trance hall ho paused for a second. There
was Olivia with a shawl of fleecy wool about
her head and shoulders standing In the
doorway and looking out upon the moon-
light Had she known or guessed or hoped that
ho would Bud her there? The tlmldestmald-
en will give chances to her lover. She bad
hoped that he would find her there and bad
feared as maidens do. There U nothing
prettier nothing more delightful tobeawaro
of than these thy hopes and tender fears.
Lawrence was at her side almost before he
knew It
"Olivia I" It was not strange either to her
or him that ho should call her by her
Christian name. She did not answer but
she looked at him briefly and shyly. "Oliv
ia I" he said again and taking both her
hands In his hu stooped over them and kiss-
ed them. This was undoubtedly a masterly
and Insolent way of wooing but she did not
resentlt Sho did not even attompt to draw
her hands away. "Olivia I" he said a third
time standing still with both ner nanus in
his. "I loved you from the minute I first
saw you."
Still the tald nothing and his arms so
yearned for her that he put them both
around her and as In that Impudent dream
of his when he rode toward tho forest of
Banceau the golden head lay upon his
breast liven to this she submitted in si
lence and without so much as the merest
attempt to repulse him. Only on the hand
which touched nor not cneeg reu one large
warm tear. ....
