Wk suppose that the next legislature
like all that have gone before It will
deem It meet right and their bounden

make provision for the Increase of In-

done Its work so far as moral questions
are conccnu'd. Tiki vexed question of

very safe one for legislatures to let

Now. my mind was wholly occupied
with the elTort to account for the orluln
of the thought to which I owed my en-
capo from a bloody nnd cruel death. It
was not all Intuition. It wns not
evolved from my own mind by any men
tal process Known to mental puiiuso-
phy: It not only came with startling
suddenness but with commanding en-
ergy and resistless force demonstrating
that It originated from some outside In-

but the sense of the Impending danger
soon reualled uie to my senses and wak-
ing my sleeping companions I Imparled
to them the substance of tbe supernatu
ral message. At Ural they only laughed
at me telling me I had Indluns ou the
brain nnd had simply been dreaming;
but when Ibey saw me bridle and saddle
my horse and prepare to start they
made haste to make similar prepara-
tion! and ere long we were making a
hasty retreat and keeping a sharp look-
out and frequently casting anxious
looks behind us. There was no moon
but It wns a clear starlight night. The
next morning a little alter sunrise we
passed over the brow of quite a consid-
erable hill and concluded to halt half
way down lie side In a clump of stunted
bushes for tbe purpose or snatching a
hurried breakfast and allowing our
horsea a abort rest as well as a few
mouihstul of grass taking however the
precaution to station a sentinel on the
brow of the bill we had lust passed with a
Held glass Willi which to scan the horlon
in our rear for anv advancing Indians.
The sentinel threw himself flat down
upon the ground. A half hour after we
had halted our sentinel called to us
that he saw a band ofludlany ten miles
away but that they did not appear to be
following upon our trail but moving In
a parallel line though several mllea
south of our trail. Of course we lost
no time In resuming our retreat but
pursued a noriheaaternly dlreclon pass-
ing northward of all hills encountered on
our line of retreat so as 11 possible to
avoid tbe obsersavatlon ol tbe Indians.
We reached lloerne on August 21 1835
and halted there for one day. While In
JUoernelraet George Wllklni Kendall
of the New Orleans Picayune whom I
had known In New Orleans and who
had established a larire sheep ranch not
many miles from lloerne. We pushed
on rrom noerne noun-u ine oommauii-
Ing ollloer of the troops at that post of
the locality where we had seen the In-
dians. Upon two subsequent occasions tbe
spirit of my mother sated my life tinder
peculiar circumstances. I had taken a
berth at New Orleans on one of the
limit steamboats plying the Mississippi
and every thing had gone on smoothly
and pleasantly until the steamboat
landed at Natchez about 11 o'clock In
the night. 1 wns lying In my herth-I
had been asleep but had been awakened
by the ringing of tho bell for tbe land-
ing. Allatonco tbe thought was Im-
printed on my mind with com-
manding energy and reelsliets force
"lia-lcn to quit the buat something
dreadful Is going to happen to It before
It rea-hra Vlcksburg." 1 arose dreri-
ed told I lie clerk I would slop at
Natchez and went ashnro with my bag-
gage. About daybreak the boat
was dlscotcred to be on lire
and was soon enveloped In
llinies. The Ion of ilk- was
Immense many passengers being
burned to death In their state rooms so
rapidly did the flames spread. On the
other occasion I was traveling on a
astage-ouach from Memphis to Jackson
Tennesset there were elirht other pas
sengers Inside and several seated on top
of the stage. The driver after driving
across a small creek stoppeu ine uorses
and got off for the purpose of watering
the learn the thought was Instantan
eously Imprinted on my mind with the
same commanding energy and resistless
rorce as on previous occasions "naae
haste to get out of thecoach be quick"
and Instantly I opened the dour and
jumped out. Hardly had my feet louchd
the ground before ine norsei oasneu on
frantically at a furious speed. After
running some hundred yards the stage
was overturned and then dragged. All
the passengers were bruited three were
killed outright and four mure died from
their Injuries. These my friends are
my reasons for believing In spiritualism
and my belief has actually grown In b"
part nnd parcel ol my being; still. I have
never gone to see any of the prelessed
mediums nor do I claim to be n medium
mtseir. I nmnoi be more exullult In
my explanations fur the reaon that I
myself do not oomurehend the mystery
oi spiritual communication
Such was the store of I.nclen Elmer
tome I was loo deeply Impressed and
awe-stricken to banter nnd laugh at him
as 1 had been wont to do.
I exacted from I.uclen a promise that
In case he should die before me his spir-
it would communicate with uie were It
possible and give ine suuh Information
aaheoould.nf the snirlt land. I fre
quently recalled this promise to mind
rolled forward with their returnless
tide. Events crowded upon the heels
of events. The war lie! ween the north
