things that Mr. Chosney could not ex-

Mr. Chcsuoy stared at tho girl with

"Scnorltat S-s-t! Scnorita!" reached
in a low whisper tho ears of Scnorita
Mercedes Guudaloupo Grenndos ns sho
swung lazily In tho hammock on tho

"Who Is UP" she asked in Spanish.
"Pablo!" came In tho samo low
whisper.
"Good Pablo come here."
A tall negro showing in tho slightly
coppery hue of tho skin tho mixturo of
Indinn blood stolo cautiously across tho
open spaco between tho houso and the
thick tjushes and almost crawling
reached the piaco where Ills young mis-
tress was.
"Well Pablo what news?" eagerly
demanded tile young girl.
"All lost senorital All lost!"

Tho youuggirl hesitated a moment
and then Mikl. sliaiplv:
"Pablo go to Don Eu riquo and tell
htm to go to the old hut down in the
swamp. I'll ho there In half un hour."
As tho peon turned to executo tho or-
der the girl ran Into the house and
onco moro silence foil upon thu piaco.
Tho revolution ono of thoso unsuccess-
ful revolutions of which ho history of
Columbia Is full wns just over and Hon
Enrique Gonzales found himself on tho
losing side.
Under ordinary circumstances ho
might have surrendered; but whon ho
heard that thu dreaded Indians of tho
great Canca Valley had been placed
upon his track ho knew thero was noth-
ing to do but to fly. For theso men are
noted in tho northern part of South
America for the fact that they novor
givo or take quarter. They are liko hu-
man bloodhounds; their ono Idea is to
kill. Don Enrlquo had good reason to
tnako most of bis tlmo with tho Canca-
nos after hint.
Down in tho cano swamp stood nn
old palm house tho sides rondo of up-
right sticks split from tho black palm
and lashed to cross-pieces and tho roof
heavily thatched. Here sitting on a
log In tho shadow was Don Enrique a
young fellow about twonty-sevon whllo
lying on tho ground was tho peon
Pablo.
Suddenly tho Peon ruiscd his bead.
"Somethln' comin' senor!"
Tho two listened for a minute and
then through tho only path to tho hut
camo a largu mule saddled and bridled
followed by another one upon which
was tho scnorita.
Don Eurlquo had tho girl in Ids arras
almost before tho animal stopped mov-
ing and tho whispered wonts of en-
dearment tho rapturous kisses and
looks which thu two gavo each other
told tho old old story plainly.
"But denrest why havo you got your
bablt?" he asked at last.
"Because because Oh 'Rlque
you must let me go with you!" sho said
trembling as she spoko.
"Impossible! ou do not know what
this trip means."
"But I must! To-day" she went on
with a blush "would bare been our
wedding and 1 cannot I cannct let
you go alone!"
"In groat perplexity Don Enrlquo
looked at peon for advice.
Pablo had survod his father as well as
himself and Pablo's forefathers bad
served tho house first as slaves and
then as froeraen ever since tho llrst
Gonzales bad settled in tho valley. In
replv to tho look tho peon gave a grunt.
"But but Mercedos" said tho vounc
man turning to her "how could you
cross tho mountains?"
"Pablo can carry mo can you not
Pablo?"
"Yes scnorita" tho peon "answored.
"Very well" he answered In a re-
signed tono. "But we've got to start
now. Como on Pablo."
Placing tho girl on hor mulo again
Don Enrlquo mounted his and lod by
tho peon the party mado their way out
of the cano Into the main road. Once
on this they pushed ahead rapidly
Pablo keeping up without tbo slightest
dllliculty.
The road which at first was good
gradually got wilder and rougher un-
til ns they went up tho mountains the
niulos would stop and pant every now
and then beforo beginning ono of tho
frightful climbs during which they had
to almost spring from rock to rock.
Still up and up tbo mules climbed
urged on as ranch as possible by their
riders.
Suddenly Pablo wbo had boon look-
ing back said
"Look senor."
And Don Enrique turning Baw far
below a string of what soemed liko lit-
tle brown boys carrying long sticks
crossing nn open space.
"Eight nine ten" ho counted in a
tone of some bitterness. "Well it we
must fight we must" ho went on set
ting Ills teem naru ami mecnnnicaiiy
loosening his revolver
"No light here senor" said tho won
earnestly. "No good here. Up dero"
.pointing as ho spoke to a peak about
urea nuiea irom mem.
"All right ntblo."
And onco moro tho mules were urged
along by voicu and spur. Hut it the
fugitives had seen their pursuers they
bed In turn been soon and tho race
began between them. Tho road was
frlehtful.
At ono slilo Iho rocks lowered aboro
them until It scumod ns thouirh ther
renchud tho sky; while on the other
hand a hideous yawning barranca as
they call thoso strango crevices In tho
Andes and their as-ociato ranges wont
down sheer somo six or seven hundred
feet.
Moro and moro frichtfiil became tho
pass until tho young girl was forced to
cover her eyes with her hand unable to
look out nnr longer. lxng before 1'ablo
had taken her brldlo rein whllo Don
Enrlquo rodu behind. Tho mules with
mo wonucnui instinct wtitcii marks
them stepped as carefully ns cats try-
ing ovcry stono boforo rostlng their
weight upon It. Suddenly Pablo stop-
ped. "Get down here scnorita" he said
as. lifting her from tho saddle ho
placed her on her feet. You too souor.
No ono can rido hero."
Tho ledge mado n sharp turn to tho
right and on tho turn was not more
than two feet wide. Whllo Don Enrl-
quo held tho girl In his arms her head
burlod In Ills shoulder Pablo cautiously
led tho mulo sho had been riding round
tho turn. Then ho returned to tho
other telling tho two to go ahead.
Holding on to tho rough rocks with
ono arm around Mcrcvdcs Don Enrl-
quo moved inch by Inch round the
jioliit and as titer rcachod tho other
side sank down on tho wide platform
where tho mulo was standing fairly
faint with the reaction from tho ner-
vous strain whllo Mercedes fainted out-
right In the meantime Pablo bad becun to
cautiously drive tho second mulo round
tho turn. Just ns tho animal was
twisting itself round a diabolical series
of yells began up the pass and tho In-
dians camo running in. The mulo
started ono foot supped and after a
moment s vain pawing to rccovor its
footing it Inuuclied out into tho air
turninir over and over until It met its
death in tbo gulf below smashed out of
shapo on tho pointed rocks. Tho mo

Indians enabled Pablo to slip round
tho turn In safety. Kouiriilv shaklne
Don Enrique he said significantly:

too soon however. A head coppery-
brown in color where tho hideous red
and black of the war-paint did not hide
It was thrust around tho rock only in
timo to get n cut from Pablo's machete

and thu next seemingly urged ou by
pressure from behind fared the same
way. Then camo a pause. A moment
afterwards a cloud of little arrows

ped with a tuft of cotton flew through
tho air ard then airain thero was

rablo?"
"No senor; dis only place."
Again tho Indians tried to steal
round and again Pablo's machete fell.
But this timo what looked like a stick
about thrco foot long had been turned
towards blm by an Indian lying on
his stomach and ns tho peon was
raising his arm to strike he felt a llttlo
prick like a pin in tho leg. The arrow
fell to the ground but Publo glancing
uown saw tno enu ol a lino splinter In
tho wound. Don Enrlquo at once at-
tempted to dig this out but both ho and
tho peon knew it wns no use. Tho cu-
tare poison had touched tho blood and
in less time than it takes to tell it
Pablo began to foel numb all over and
sank to the ground the girl wiping tho
cold perspiration from his forehead.
But wliilo Don Enrlquo had been
busied with tho peon two of the In-
dians had passed tho point and a third
was followiug. Ills revolver settled one
of them but fio missed tho second shot.
Catching up tho heavy machete from
where the peon had dropped it ho be-
gan a hand-to-hand light. Feinting at
ono over tho head ho whirled the heavy
weapon around and caught his too un
der tho arm almost cutting him in
two. Striding over tho dead body ho
met two of them at onco. Tho one to
left ho struck on tho head laying the
brain open; but n glanco showed him
thnt tho machete oftho ono to right was
coming down. IIo just managed to
spring out of tho way when a deafen-
ing report just by bis ear and the leap
of the Indian into tho air told blm that
Mercedes had picked up the revolver
where bo lot it full. To advance to the
corner and striko down tho man com-
ing round was tho work of momont
and then with a sigh of relief bo rea-
lized that ho once more held tho pass.
Tho rest was but for a moment though.
Taking tho revolver from Mercedes
and leaning cautiously round tho rock
he waited in silence. Beforo long he
saw a bead raised and fired killing
tbo last one of tbo party after him.
During this tlmo Pablo bad been get-
ting weakor and weaker. When Don
Enrique knelt beside blm tbo peon was
almost gone but he could murmur:
"Do children senor?"
"Are mlno always!"
"Good-bye senor!" ns the eyes which
bad been getting duller and duller fin-
ally closed and Pablo was gone.
Tho broad road to Venezuela was
traversed slowly by Don Enriquo and
bis promised bride and at tho first
town they camo to a very quiet and
somewhat hurried wedding took piaco
In the rudo church of palm. However
thoy reached the coast and before
many weeks were safo in France. Nor
was It many years before another turn
'In tho political wheel brought back to
Columbia Don Enriquo Gonzales and
bis buautlful wife.
TUB DOCTOR'S STOItY.
"It Is five years. Isn't It since yon
woro hero?" asks tho doctor as wo two
lag a little behind tho rest of the cqucs-
traln party who are winding along the
road through Mlssion.Canon in South-
ern California.
"Xcs" I responded "and think now
as then that Southern California Is the
garden of the earth and Santa Barbara
tbo roost delightful snot in it."
"Thanks" ho replies; "of courso I en-
dorse such sentiments to tho fullest ex-
tent" "And tho people" I proceeded en-
thusiastically "are certainly unusually
entertaining; thoso that one likes are
charming and thoso that ono dislikes
generally bare a thrilling history as a
background."
"That's true" ho says. "By tho way
were the Luckeys hero when you left?"
"I think so. Weren't they a family
of girls with a widowed mother who
lived Just beyond the Arlington?"
'That is tno family and the second
