With recently received
grant money, Cumberland
Presbyterian Children's Home
will provide exactly what its
name dictates: a home.
After getting $300,000 from
the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foun-
dation, the home can build a
boys cabin and three duplexes
for single parent families.
Cumberland, a 22-acre fa-
cility on the corner of Bernard
Street and Interstate 35, cur-
rently provides housing for 32
orphans and has four duplex-
es for single parent families.
With the additional three
duplexes, Cumberland can
house 10 families at one time.
Diana (last name with-
held) moved to the home
with her two young children
in January after separating
from her husband.
"I like it here," Diana said. "I
like the stability, and security."
Chandra Heggins, a Den-
ton caseworker in the sin-
gle parent program, said a
single parent wanting in the
program must go through
a phone interview and a
"home interview."
If the applicant passes both
interviews, the family can
move in if room is available.
Brian White, director of de-
velopment, said the demand
for the program is rising, and
the new facilities will allow
for more families.
The home also provides a
range of services the families
have access to, such as learn-
ing budgeting skills, family
therapy and nutritional needs
for their children.
"Just basic skills we have
and take for granted," Heg-
gins said. Cumberland also
provides medical and den-
tal care,
While the single parents
in the program are not re-
quired to get jobs, it is en-
couraged. "Child care is
the biggest problem we run
into," Heggins said.
Single parent families can
stay in the program for one
year, and after leaving the
program, Cumberland contin-
ues service to the family for
two years. Two single moth-
ers have purchased their own
homes since leaving the home.
Cumberland's 32 children
are housed in four cabins. The
children come from a variety

of backgrounds, and their
ages range from young chil-
dren to 18. All of the children
go to Denton public schools.
"The children are integrat-
ed with the Denton commu-
nity," White said. "They do a
lot of community service. The
kids got together for a tsuna-
mi relief fund."
The Cinderella Project, a
charitable organization, pro-
vided the children with prom
dresses and tuxedos for Den-
ton's prom on Saturday.
"It is a very neat pro-
gram," White said. "The
girls are so excited."
