Hoegaarden
Brouwerij van Hoegaarden
ABV: 4.9 %
Availability: Midway Mart,
Metzler's Food and Beverage
Price: $10 / 6-pack
Wheat beers are ubiquitous these
days with new examples of the
style sold by every major brewery,
though few of them are made with
any subtlety or depth of flavor (I'm
looking at you Shock Top). Belgians
brew some of the best on earth, which
is why I selected Hoegaarden, also
the only Belgian-made beer on this
list — there would be more, but they
aren't easy to come by. Hoegaarden
is a masterful example of a wheat-
thick beer: a pale, cloudy body with a
bready smell and a citrusy taste with
slight carbonation and a whole lot of
coriander. It's slightly bitter on the
aftertaste, but Hoegaarden is still my
preferred drink on hot, summer days.

90-Minute
ndia Pale Ale

ABV: 6 %
Availability: Midway Mart, Metzler's Food

Price: $10 / 4-pack
Hopheads unite! I'm fanatic about India Pale
Ales, though they are not the most popular with
beer rookies. This notoriously hoppy style is a
variant of the English Pale Ale, or bitter. When
British colonials still ruled in India, they wanted
a taste of home, but normal pale ales spoiled dur-
ing the six-month voyage from home. What to
do? Add more hops and make it more alcoholic,
of course! Thus, the IPA was born and today it is
a testing ground for innovative American brewer-
ies looking to strut their stuff with a creative take
on this extreme classic. And no one has done it
better on this side of the pond than Dogfish Head
Brewery. These guys know to make IPAs. The
90-minute is considered by many to be the great-
est IPA in America. I happen to be one of them.
Eveiy sip of this baby is like getting socked right
in the kisser — in a good way. Hops rule for the
IPA, but the 90-minute also carries a cake-like
density in the body, swollen with fruit and herb
beneath the lacey head. If you love IPAs or are
feeling adventurous, do yourself a favor and
check this one out.
Sierra Nevada
Pale Ale
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company
ABV: 5.6 %
Availability: Nearly everywhere
Price: $8 / 6-pack
Probably the most recognized beer
on this list, Sierra Nevada's lime green-
labeled bottle is an absolute must for
any beer-ophile. This brewery spear-
headed the craft beer movement before
it even existed. I highly recommend all
of its brews, from the icy-smooth porter
to the rich and spicy wheat. But the
pale ale is the jewel in the crown. Silky
and golden, the quality hops don't
overwhelm the taste buds, expertly bal-
anced by the nutty, wheaty malts. This
is great any time of the year or day.
I'd drink it in the morning. Actually, I
have. Cheers, mates!
