BRO WNh VILLE EXTEN-
SION. Arrangements are reported to have
been completed for extending the St
Louis Brownsville & Mexico from
Brownsville Texas to Tampico. Mex-
ico. Large tracts of land are being
purchased in tie southern republic
by the owners o fthe road. The capi-
talists interested in the projected ex-
tension are reported to have purch-
ased 5000000 acres of land along
the route with the intention of di-
viding it up into small farms and try-
ing to attract settlers. Galveston
News.
The extension of this road to Tam-
pico Mexico means the opening up
and development of a very rich ag-
ricultural country which in all prob-
ability will be settled shortly. With
the addition and settlement of this
territory Brownsville should become
an important distributing point for
Northern Mexico. It will also mean
the revival of the city of Matamoros
and the restoration of that place to
its former commercial and political
Importance in Mexico. The citizens
of both places should take the keen-
est interest in this project and give
every encouragement to it.

THE LEARNERS CLUB.
Life and Works of Thackeray Fur-
nish a Fine Program.
With Miss Morris as its hostess at
the Terry residence on Levee street
the Learners' Club enjoyed a delight-
ful meeting Saturday afternoon there
being fourteen members in attend-
ance. The development of the En-
glish novel up to and including the
time of William Makepeace Thackeray
furnished most interesting work for
the club for this afternoon.
The program began with an excel-
lent paper by Miss Bell on ' The Novel
and the Romance a Contrast.'- A
history of the terms. nocl and ro-
HallasB Co!
niance was given an dthe facts de-
veloped that -nfiile the novel em-
phasizes character the romance em-
phasizes events :j that the novel gen-
erally lays its scene in the country
and time of the' author and the ro-
mance generality lays its scene in
some foreign country and remote
time; that the novel is generally real-
istic the romance idealistic. Miss
Bell handled her subject very ably.
The life and work of Thackeray were
dealt with in a comprehensive paper
by Miss Morris. The varied exper-
ience of his early years the occupa-
tion and experiences of his early man-
hood together with his revenues were
related in brief outline- showing their
effect upon the later career of the
novelist. His family life his first
ventures in fiction and the succes-
ses that were his were brought out
effectively.
Miss Dysart showed extensive read-
ing of the works of both Thackeray
and George Eliot in her very in-
teresting paper on the ''Author's
Comment in Thackeray" in which she
compared the two authors in this
respect. The remark of Andrew Lang
on Thackeray's habit of interjecting
comments throughout his writings
who said: "His thoughts come like
the intervention of the Greek Chorus
as an ornament and fresh delight"
seemed to voice the sentiment of the
writer of this paper also.
A most delightful variation of sub
ject was given the club in a dialect
recitation by Miss Blackshear who is
quite an accomplished elocutionist.
General discussion of the above sub
jects followed.
The club adjourned to meet next
Saturday afternon with Mrs. New-
man. LATE LOCALS.

Small House Burned. A small
house in the outskirts of the city be-
longing to Mrs. J. I. P. Franklin and
occupied by a family of Mexicans
was destroyed by fire about five
o'clock Saturday afternoon. A fire
alarm was turned in and the fire boys
responded at once taking out the
hose cart but it was found that the
burning house was outside of the fire
limits and it was impossible to throw
a stream of water upon the house.
The fire boys fought the fire as best
they could with buckets however.
About all of the househould goods be-
longing to the Mexican family were
saved but the house was a total loss
with no insurance the loss being
about 5200. The origin of the fire is
not known.
The Mexican government has taken
off the duty on wheat which will be
entered free from December 15 to

Better Price for Cabbage.
Prospects are better for cabbage
this season than last according to
Messrs. V. B. Northrup of Minneapo-
lis and B. M. Northrup of Denver
prominent produce dealers of their
respective cities who are "here at
'present looking over the crop pros-
pect in the Valley. The fact that
there was a large quantity of north-
ern cabbage carried over in cold stor-
abge last winter said these gontle-
was largely responsible for the losses
of southern cabbage growers last sea-
son but this winter the cold storage
supply is not nearly so great and it
appears probable that the price will
be better. They anticipate a largo
crop from the Valley judging by the
1 acreage that is now being planted in
I cabbage.
