? HICKS HARD WARE CO.
A large number of interested par-
ties including the principal land
owners of Hidalgo County met at
Mission Thursday June 24 and
again at San Juan the following day
and perfected plans for the organ-
ization of a company to construct
an irrigation system which it is
claimed will irrigate about 100000
acres of land in Hidalgo County.
Among those at this meeting' were
John Closner of Chapin Dr. A. W.
Roth of San Juan J C. Kelly of
Brownsville C. S. Morton of McAl-
len John J. Conway of Mission D.
IB. Chapin of Chapin. Robt. J. Smith
i of Mercedes L. C. Hill of Harlin-
jgen S. A. Robertson of San Benito
! Duval West of San Antonio. R. N.
'jlagill F. W. Kibbe F. C. Pierce
E. B. Gore and C. G. White of
I Brownsville. :
The following were electecf direc-
tors of the company: A. W. Roth
John J. Conway John Closner C.
. S. Morton and John C. KeLy. The
'general offices have been established
at San Juan from whicn point Dr.
'A. W. Roth president and managing
director assisted by John C. Kelly
' the secretary and C. S. Morton the
treasurer will direct and push the
affairs of the company.
I It is the purpose of this company
to take over several of the plants
now being operated in the Lower
Rio Grande and' operate them under
one system which is designed to be
one of the largest in the country.
According to the plans the main
canal will be so constructed as to
take water out of tie Rio Grande
by gravity and convev the same to
lands owned by the parties to the
' undertaking. It is realized that sev-
eral years will be required to com-
.plete and carry into effect the grav-
ity system so in the meantime a
'pumping plant will be installed on
the Rio Grande at a place yet to be
1 decided upon.
While arrangements have not yet
been completed for financing this
enterprise it is understood that the
money will be obtained from a bond
issue of $1500000 secured by mort-
gages upon the land of the various
. parties in the deal. The individual
companies will conduct the business
tot selling and developing land as
now but the water supply will be
' controlled entirely by this new
company.
( That the company means business
! is evidenced by the fact that sev-
:eral corps of engineers have been
I ordered to the field. Camping out-
Jfits are being purchased today for
' the engineers who will take the field
I immediately to locate the line of
'the canal. E. B. Gore chief engi-
neer expects to submit his report
within ninety days so that if no
further hitch occurs work on this
great undertaking will begin early
in the fall.
The estimated cost is more than
two million dollars which figure
will entitle it to first place in this
valley of big irrigation projects.
While the initial cost is large the
promoters of this canal claim that
j the greater economy of operation
will result in saving thousands of
dollars now spent for keeping up
:the many sma plants to be done
J away thus lowering the price of
water.
' Already about 90000 acres have
been signed up and it is expected
that more will be brought in before
the next meeting of the board of
directors to be held Saturday July
3 at Brownsville.

' B. E. Utecht of Fort Worth man-
ager of the Texas News Service vis-
ited Brownsville yesterday and to-
day for the purpose of making ar-
rangements with The Herald for the
use of his daily news service by this
paper. A contract for the same was
closed and the result will be that
the readers of The Herald will be
supplied each day with a compre-
hensive report of airimportant hap-
penings throughout the state in ad-
dition to the Associated Press re-
port of the general news of the
world.
The Texas News Service is a com-
paratively new news bureau. It wan
established by Mr. Utecht and
through his energetic efforts has
been brought to a high degree of
efficiency. Mr. Utecht though a
young man is endowed with judg-
ment as well as ability. He is also
courageous and was not afraid to
spend his money in an effort to build
up an exclusive Texas news service.
Ho saw in this great state a magnifi
cent field for a news bureau. It was
an untried field but he believed it
could be developed. Establishing
headquarters at Fort Worth Mr.
Utecht began to build up the Texas
News Service. With courage born
of faith lie put money and work
without stint into the enterprise and
within a comparatively short time
the results have already justified his
expenditure. The Texas News Ser-
vice today includes a large number
of the leading newspapers of the
state among its patrons The Herald
being the latest to be added to the
list. The service is a good one. It
is thorough. In every town of im
portance throughout the state Mr.
Utecht has secured wideawake cor
respondents who keep his papers
posted on all the news worth know
ing in Texas as quickly as it trans
pires. It is reliable. When people
see a news bulletin from the Texas
News Service they know it is so.
Mr. Utecht was surprised to learn
what great development has taken
place in the Lower Rio .Grande Val
ley and was gratiffSd at his success
in adding The Brownsville Herald
to his list of patrons. He left this
afternoon for Corpus Christi witn
the expectation of closing a contract
with the Caller for the Texas News
Service.
