Xt w York Dec. 24. Among
Christmas eve festivitjes in the met-
ropolis .onight the most notable will
lie the opening to vehicular traffic of
the great Manhattan bridge across
tue East river. In some quarters the
ceremonies are denounced as prema-
ture and it is alleged. that the span
is opened at tuis time only to permit
certain otlicials of the McClellan ad.
ministration to get their Barnes on
biass plates. It is alleged that the
roadways are only makeshuts and
unlit for real use."
When completed the' Manhnttan
Bridge will have co.n taxpayers $25-
iilio.ooo distributed as follows: Cost
of construction $ 1 4')ou000; land
eftst for approaches; $10000000;
terminal building sat Canal street
and the Bowery and on the Flat-
bush -c venue exienston Brooklyn Si -
0000(10. The roadways will remain open
permanently after today. It will
probably be some months before the
two promenades will be ready. As
to the furnishing the bridge with a
trolley and elevar; furfuce :Jiat is
;is much a mystery as ;t has been :'or
llu last year. P aln.jst approaches
the proportions of a scandal for
which the Board of Estimate and (he
Puidn Service Commission are to
blame.
There is every reason to believe
that almost another year will elapse
before noole obtain transportation
facilities over the bridge. It is true
iliat the Board of Estimate is now
harrying to pass out the franchises
