1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to
3 recognize the Twentieth Century Club in Lubbock on the grand
4 occasion of its centennial anniversary; and
5 WHEREAS, The Twentieth Century Club was formally organized in
6 Lubbock in 1909 within months of the formation of the town; what
7 began as a literary endeavor increasingly reflected the active
8 involvement of the founders in all areas of civic affairs and
9 community development; and
10 WHEREAS, Among the club's most notable and lasting legacies
11 is the library system whose foundation began with the first lending
12 libraries of members who later formed the Lubbock Library
13 Association; the club hired a librarian to maintain the collection
14 and petitioned county commissioners for funding; and
15 WHEREAS, The Twentieth Century Club actively supported the
16 establishment of Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech
17 University, in Lubbock and also began a student loan fund that later
18 became part of the Paul Whitfield Horn Fellowship program; members
19 of the club have also worked with the university as professors and
20 staff; and
21 WHEREAS, The influence of the Twentieth Century Club in
22 Lubbock has been felt far and wide through its affiliation with such
23 groups as the Federated Women's Club and its support of civic
24 issues, charities, and literary and art promotion; and
