Stéel Invests
82.16 Million for
Modernization
The nation's steel companies
will spend $2.166,000.000 for
modernization of facilities in
107li, the American Iron and
Steel Institute reports. T' ?
estimate is based on a survey
of companies producing more
than 90 percent of the steel
made in this country. It will
be their fourth consecutive
year of capital outlays exceed-
ing S2 billion.
The capital expenditures of
the companies for 1969 had
been forecast a year ago at
*2.442.000,000 but the actual
figure shows a reduction from
that level to $2.1*6.000,000
apparently a result of the an-
ticipation of the repeal of the
seven percent investment tax
credit, Some steel executives
have been quoted as saying
that they plan-to restrict their
spending to projects already
underway or to those con-
sidered essential to th'J indus-
try's continuing technological
advancement.
Steel companies have made
capital outlays of more than
•S26 billion since 1950. and
more than $16 billion in the
past decade.
Much of the curn tit and re-
cent spending has gone for the
installation of basic oxygen
furnaces, strand (continuous i

number of costly steps in con-

The old adage that the shoe-
maker's children go without
shoes just isn't so, according to
David Egozi. In August 1960,
he arrived in Miami from Cuba
with five $100 bills hidden in
one of his shoes. A single suit-
case and the clothes on his back
were all that he was permitted
to take with him as he left his
native country.
Today,- loss than 10 years
later, he is president of a shoe
company with sales of over $36
million annually. A well estab-
lished member of the Hialeah,
Florida business community,
Egozi has watched his Suave
Shoe Corporation grow from a
plant turning out 120 pairs of
canvas shoes a day to one pro-
ducing smart American shoes
Company at a at t'ie rate 400,000 weekly.
Akron (Ohio; In Pre-Castro days, Egozi
learned the shoe business from
■th his father, who was the largest
shoe manufacturer in Cuba.
