is making a better growth this
year than it ever has In the
past. Greenwood attributes
the good growth to a heavy
application of fertilizer last
fall. He has one field that was
seeded with locally grown
seed. Greenwood states"Thls
is the best first year clover
I have ever grown."

Three members of the Ch-
erokee Hiding Club earned two
trophies each at the youth
horse show in the Astrodome
last weekend.
They were: Wendee White-
head, third in poles, fourth
in barrels; Cathy Copeland,
second in western riding, fif-
th in reining; GiGi Dickinson,
fourth in western horseman-
ship and sixth in western pl-
easure.
There were nearly 800 en-
tries in the three-day show.
Douglas Gray was assisted
last week by A. W. Coker of
the Soil Conservation Serv-
ice in developing a soil and
water conservation plan for
his farm at Henry's Chapel.
Gray is a young banker, ran-
ches and horsa trainer. He
should be a good cooperator
with the Cherokee County Soil
and Water Conservation Dls-

Two Cherokee County 4-11
youths entered the calf sc-
ramble at the Houston Fat
Stock Show last Saturday. Iti-
chard Singletary and Jody Tr-
ansier gave it the best they
had, but neither was success-
ful in getting the halter on
a calf.
Jody, however, caught th-
ree calves, and for iii.s effort
received the bonus, "hard-
luck" awarl given to one con-
testant at each event.

R. Gray and his father, Cur-
tis Gray, both of whom are
good conservation farmers.
This plan was developed on
a 127 acre tract of land that
Douglas recently purchased
from his grandfather.

A. White, both of Rusk were
assisted last week by techn-
icians of the Soil Conserva-
tion Service in revising their
conservation plans. Both of
these men have purchased ad-
ditional land which was incl-
uded in their farm
plans.
Ben Points and V. J. Bal-
lard were assisted by John
Hale of the Texas Forest Ser-
vice and W. E. BradforJ of
the Soil Conservation Service
last week with woodland man-
agement problems. Point's
farm is located G miles east
of Rusk and Ballard's is at
Barsola.

ain is not growing as it should
an application of fertilizer will
help. Clover will respond to
a low nitrogen fertilizer such
as a 3-12-12. Grain will need
a fertilizer that is high in nit-
rogen. Ammonium nitrate
should pay on a good stand of
oats or rye at this time.
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY,
Colo. - - Cadet Francis W.
Townsend, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Wayne Townsend, Rt. 1,
Rusk, Tex., has been named
'to the Superintendent's List
at the U.S. A¿r Force Ac-
ademy.
The cadet, a member of the
class of '70, was selected
for his outstanding achieve-
ment in both academics and
military performance. He will
be granted special privileges
and wear a silver star and
wreath designating the honor
accorded by the Academy su-
perintendent.
He has also been selected for
the position of flight com-
mander with the rank of ca-
det captain.
The cadet will be commis-
sioned a second lieutenant and
awarded a B.S. degree upon
his graduation from the Acad-
emy.
Cadet Townsend is a 1966
graduate of Rusk High School
where he was valedictorian of
his class and a member of
the National Honor Society.

have become an important in-
vestment. They grow more and
more scarce each year."
The scarcity is due to several
factors. First, the price of
labor has increased as the Ori-
ental countries have become in-
dustralized. In Persia, where
rugs are primarily made by
women and children, a recent
law forbids children under 14
years of age to work.
