Blake Meets With Supporters
State Senator Roy Blake
met with a group of suppor-
ters in Rusk Thursday.
He laughingly stated that
the luncheon was a "pre-
announcement, pre-
announcement" function.
Campaign leaders from
Nacogdoches outlined
plans for a $100,000 fund
drive to underwrite expen-
ses for the Senator's
reelection.
The gathering was
hosted by Emmett H.
Whitehead and James I.
Perkins in the Thomas J.
Rusk Hotel.
Representing the
Senator's supporters from
Cherokee County were
Gary Godfrey, J. N.
Mulloy, M. G. Moore, Bill
Bailey, Royce Beall, Al
Olhfest, Jeff Austin Jr.,
Crawford Godfrey and
Dudley Waller of Jackson-
ville; Charles Hassell,
Lester Hughes, Jean
Bryant, Joe Terrell, Marie
Whitehead and the hosts of
Rusk.
With the Senator from
Nacogdoches were Dr.
Nancy Speck, Ike Frazer,
Dr. and Mrs. Archie Mc-
Donald and Jarvis Am-
nions.
Sen. Blake pointed to the
fact that the 3rd Senatorial
District comprises 15 coun-
ties.
"I am on the Senate's
Finance Committee and
Chairman of the Senate
Administration Commit-
tee," he said. "This
represents seniority for the
district, which is your
district."
The senator drew a two-
year term in the redisric-
ting process and is seeking
reelection to a four year
term.
Former State Rep.
Whitehead had praise for
the senator's service to this
area.
"In the closing days of
the last session, he was
able to help us get about a
half million dollars for the
Texas State Railroad,"
Whitehead said. "We failed
in funding for a new laun-
dry at Rusk State Hospital,
but with our Senator's help,
we hope to achieve this in
the next session."
Speaking for the
senator's campaign
leaders, Mrs. McDonald
said that it hoped $100,000
can be raised in the 15
counties.
"Nacogdoches has
pledged $30,000 and
Angelina $20,000. If each of
the other counties can help
with $4,000, we will reach
our goal," she said.
Supporters at the lun-
cheon were given the op-
portunity to indicate areas
of service in the senator's
campaign.
A reception will be held
Friday, Sept. 9 in the
Lufkin Civic Center to
honor Sen. Blake. Area
citizens are invited to at-
tend.

Program j
Requires
Funds
Cherokee County
residents must raise 10
percent of the cost of fun-
ding for the elderly
nutrition and transpor-
tation programs before the
remaining 90 percent
funding can be obtained
from the federal gover-
nment.
Lonnie Kellum,
executive director of the
Rusk-Cherokee Com-
munity Action Program
that oversees the program
says contrary to public
opinion, these local funds
are essential to the
program. Contracted
amount of federal dollars
must have the 10 percent
cash match before the con-
tracts can be implemented.
The 10 percent local fun-
ding comes through
donations of participants
and other concerned
citizens.
Donations are spent on
contracted items such as
raw food, salaries, utilities
and other essential items.
The elderly nutrition
program and the elderly
transportation program
are available to all persons
who are 60 years of age or
older or their spouse.
Meals are served Mon-
day to Friday at the
American Legion Hall in
Rusk; the First
Presbyterian Church in
Jacksonville; the Lions
Club Building in Alto; and
Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday at the Fairview
Community Center, Route
1, Reklaw.
