Rusk Lions Club Banquet
Rep. Todd Staples keynotes Lions Club banquet
Members of the Rusk Lions Club
heard at an address by State Rep.
Todd Staples during their annual
installation banquet Thursday
night in the Rusk Junior High
Cafetorium.
A banquet highlight was the
announcement of Jonna Wilson as
the Lioness of the Year. She re-
ceived a plaque from last year's
recipient, Sheriff James Campbell.
Mike Murray served as master
of ceremonies. He introduced
Mayor Emmett Whitehead, who
introduced Mrs. Staples and Rep.
Staples.
As one of 181 members of the
Texas Legislature, the speaker
cited those issues which he ex-
pects to be on next session's
agenda. These include education,
transportation, TDCJ, MHMR,
property tax reduction, deregula-
tion of public utilities, water and
its use.
The State Representative began
speaking with words of praise for
the Lions Club members. "You do
so much so well, it's a pleasure to
work with you." He noted that his
district is now comprised of120,000
persons as compared with 75,000
when it was a three county dis-
trict.
He closed by reminding his lis-
teners of Patrick Henry's words,
"We must look to the past to plan
for the future." Supporting his
thoughts for the future, and how
change can be expected, he cited
these figures from 1968: minimum
wage was $2.65 per hour; $5,400
would buy a new car; gasoline was
63 cents per gallon; a postage
stamp was 15 cents and Microsoft
had 13 employees.
"We look forward to working with
you in shaping a bright future for
Texas," said Rep. Staples.
Prior to his address he presented
Mayor and Mrs. Whitehead a
House Resolution of commenda-
tion on their 50th wedding anni-
versary Jan. 30.
Corrv Wallace received recogni-
tion of his 58 years service to the
Lions Club. He is the sole surviv-
ing charter member of the club
which was founded in 1940.
Lion Willis Roy (Abe) Lang, an-
other member of long standing,
received a special pin of apprecia-
tion.
Former, longtime Rusk Lion
George Dodd, now of Jacksonville,
presided at the officer installation
service for directors and
officers.These include Jim
Cromwell, president; Janet
Parker, first vice president; Mike
Ross, second vice president; Louis
Caveness, third vice president;
Charles Horton, tail twister; Willis
Roy Lang, assistant tail twister;
Jack Fitts, Lion Tamer; Ike Daniel,
membership chairman; Jonna
Wilson, secretary-treasurer; Billy
Watson and Charlie Burfoot, third
year directors; Corry Wallace and
Candis Blankinship, second year
directors; Donna Bowden and Rob-
ert Odom, first year directors.
The program included invoca-
tion and benediction by Rev. Noy
Pruitt, pastor of First United Meth-
odist Church. Lion Jack Fitts led
in the pledge to the flag. A buffet
dinner was served by Courthouse
Cafeteria owners, Mr. and Mrs.
W. A. Hunt, to an estimated 40
persons. Dinner music was pro-
vided by Weida Woodruff on the
piano.
