Steve Slover cuts the ribbon during open house at his Edward Jones Investment office at the

and well-wishers. Refreshments were served and door prizes given to those who called throughout
the day.
Rusk resident, Ray Cryer, writes of his recent trip to Mexico
By Ray Cryer
Special to the Cherokeean/Hepald
It seems now like a thousand
years ago that I considered Mexico
a strange,
foreboding
place, to be
entered only
under the pro-
tective guid-
ance of my
parents. For
decades now,
it has been my
best and most
interesting
friend. Even
during my
young adulthood, when other
places might have rebuked me or
sought my confinement, Mexico
indulged me with the patience of a
permissive grandparent. How can
I not love it? Where else would

Ray Cryer
almost everyone take the time to
sit and talk with those so ignorant
of their ways?
My recent trip, while confined to
areas just past the border, only
validated the depth of my adora-
tion. Not that I don't get frus-
trated by their government's ex-
cessive and changing rules.
1 learned some things this trip.
November is a good time to travel
in the north of Mexico. The kids
are all in school, and it can be
notably cooler. But if one goes deep
into Mexico, then altitude matters
more than the month on insuring
comfort.
¡The highest city in Mexico is
Toluca at 8,800 feet. But it is too
large, and too far away for short
trippers. Considerably closer, and
about the size of Jacksonville, is
Zacatecas at 8,200 feet. It is al-
most untouched by the hoardes of
tourists, and is beautiful to be-
hold. Most gringos go to San Miguel
de Allende, about four hours north
of Mexico City. It features cobble-
stone streets and an institute
where you can study sculpting,
Spanish, cooking, dance, etc., for a
day or a year.
You design the curriculum, not
some hidebound academician more
interested in separating you from
your dollars through questionable
course prices and fees than in
helpingyou learn...Those wanting
more adventure to their trips
should consider San Cristobal de
las Casas, nestled in the moun-
tains of the far south, just before
the Guatemalan border.
It is Zapatista territory, but
seems quite safe if you are not a
Mexican soldier. This trip all 1
really sought was Spanish colo-
nial, rustic furniture. While it is
cheap in Mexico, the further north
you move, the more outrageous
the price. I'd like to throw out
every stick of furniture I have, and
replace it all with "muebles
rustico." It speaks of an earlier,
less populated, easy going, simple
time in the world. While the shops
carrying such were always a little
elusive on where it was made, I
found some excellent retailers. In
Matamoros the store is named El
Quijote. In Nueva Laredo, there is
a huge place with two locations
called Rafael de Mexico. They can
turn your yard and home from a
ho-hum domicile into an enchanted
ranchito of Spanish nobility.
In Acuna, Rincón Mexicano,
Casa Uxmal, and Segusino are the
three places to go. In Piedras
Negras, a store facing you when
you walk across the border has
what it takes. I made so many
border forays that customs began
to question me. But, after thou-
sands of miles, and even more dol-
lars, I have found the Mexico that
can command your love too. It is
not, thank God, the gaudy Cancim,
where wall to wall Americans tan,
gorge and drink themselves into a
stupor. And I pass all I have found
onto you, with affection.
If you plan to see Mexico, there is
no substitute for having acar. Don't
be afraid to drive. Excepting the
megapolis of Mexico City, once you
clear the towns for the open road,
it is a piece of cake. But if you need
another driver, give me a call; you
can probably talk me into it. In the
meanwhile, save this article with
the store names and pick of the
towns.
Editor's note: Mr. Cryer has
visited Mexico and South
American countries numer-
ous times. On his trips, he
works with the natives and
provides food and other as-
sistance.
