Republican party shouldn't take Texas for granted
LELAND ACKER
Broumwood
To listen to conservative
talk radio, one would think
that the Democratic Party
faces extinction in the 2010
elections. Talkers like Rush
Limbaugh and Sean Hannity
have relentlessly proclaimed
the anti-Obama sentiment in
the polls and chronicled the
TEA party movement.
This backlash against the
proposed healthcare legisla-
tion and perceived increases
in taxation due to massive
stimulus bills passed in 2009
is having a profound impact
on the Republican Party,
both in Cherokee County, and
across the nation.
I have watched events in
Cherokee County unfold
via TheCherokeean.com.
Long time Democratic office
holders are switching to the
Republican Party, having
learned a lesson from the for-
mer commissioner of Precinct
3's demise in the 2008 elec-
tion. While this may bolster
Republican number s in 2010,
the fact is the leadership of
the county will probably re-
main the same.
Nationally, however. Re-
publican strategists, poll-
sters. pundits and candidates
are salivating at the prospect
of taking back both houses of
Congress. Some might have
already ordered their "Mis-
sion Accomplished" banners.
The TEA party movement is
movement in their direction,
or so they think.
Republicans would be wise
not to begin the celebrations
too early. The downturn
of the nation's economy in
2008-2009. along with the
election of President Barack
Obama and Democrats win-
ning Congress have roots in
broken promises made by
the Republican Party from
2000-2006.
George W. Bush ran his
2000 campaign on smaller
government and a stronger
national defense. What he
delivered were massive in-
creases in spending, expan-
sion of the Federal Govern-
ment (which includes "No
Child Left Behind ), and a
military that was sent into
two foreign wars under
equipped and strapped by
endless regulation.
These foreign wars were
necessary for our national
defense, but our troops were
placed in vehicles with insuf-
ficient armor, and were re-
quired to r actio for permission
to return fire on insurgents.
The elections of 2002 and
2004 brought more prom-
ises of Smaller government,
pro-family legislation, and
a stronger national defense.
What the voters got was....
nothing.

ing age in 1996 (splitting my
ballot to vote for local Demo-
cratic candidates in Cherokee
County), I have not forgotten
the broken promises of the
past decade by the GOP.
I am opposed to the current
direction the Democratic
Party is offering in Washing-
ton, but after record levels of
earmarks from 2000-2008,
and a Medicare Prescription
progríi ni that successfully
raised chug prices 30 percent,
I'm not completely sold that
the Republican Party is the
way out of this hole.
The GOP needs to abandon
the "Democr ats are bad' plat-
form, put together a vision for
the future of America, and if
elected, take a lesson from the
current administration. Pass
the legislation you promised
during the campaign.
Furthermore, the GOP
needs to quit taking Texas
for granted.

cident on Monday morning involving this Oldsmobile Intrigue driven by Hazel Wright,
86, of Rusk. While driving into the city limits, Ms. Wright ventured off the roadway and
overcorrected, turning the car over onto its side. Officials used the Jaws of Life to pull
Ms. Wright out of the car and she was taken to ETMC-Rusk with only minor injuries.
