Brownwood is served by the Citi-
zens National Bank and the First Na-
tional Bank and they have combined
deposits of $5,240,614.
Brownwood has annual retail sales
of $16,421,505. Building permits in 1940
were $632,320.
Brownwood serves a populous and
rapidly developing area of Central
and West Texas. The retail and whole-
sale trade territory served by Brown-
wood embraces approximately 15,000
square miles, constituting fifteen coun-
ties. This trade territory has a popula-
tion of over 275,000 inhabitants with a
potential purchasing power of $243,-
383,000. There are 473 retail establish-produced annually is approximately
$2,900,000. Four of these concerns dis-
tribute nationally; ten, state-wide; and
twenty-one in the local trade area on-
ly.
Brownwood is a wholesale center
for West Central Texas. Seventy-four
wholesale concerns, doing an annual
business of $8 500.000 are now located
in Brownwood. They employ around
1,250 people, having an annual pay-
roll of nearly $1,200,000.
With the beginning of the construc-
tion of Camp Bowie in November
1940, Brownwood entered a new era oi
growth and in dustrial development.

are located n Brownwocd, manufac-
turing a variety of products including:
flour, feed, ;asoiine, crushed stone,
mattresses, vinegar, peanut butter,
canned vegetables, cotton seed pro-
ducts, floor sweep, auto trailers, seed
graders, ice cream, ice, butter, glass
products, venetian blinds, monuments,
bread and pastries, bottled drinks
printed matter, optical instruments and
mill products. Manufacturing estab
lishments employ over 900 persons
and have an annual payroll of over
$864,000. The total value of productsexpanding. The 36th Division is sta-
tioned here, also units of the Third
and VIII Army Corps and the VIII
Army Corps Hecdquarters are located
in Brownwood. The total complement
of these troops is 31,000. In view of the
establishment of Texas' leading mili-
tary center the city has expanded all
of its facilities, including water and
projects are now under way to devel-
op an extensive road system including
the repaving of downtown streets and
the establishment of proper recrea-
tional facilities for the soldiers. A $65,-
000 grant has been given to the city
by the War Department to remodel a
four-story hotel to be used exclusively
