Oath's ricture of Ilnncock.
Mr. Georce Alfred Townsend'a "Gath
thus writes of Congressman Hancock ; " I
saw General Hancock durinc the week walk
ing in the afternoon. Time has hardly spared
him. He looks nearly as large and almost as
unwieldly as General Scott. His skin is of a
copper-red hue and a while mus'ache lies
upon it like a mutton chop with the wool cut-
side roasting on the coals. I thought of the
expression 'Go and get some of the hair of
the same dog and put it on the bite.' "

him in a deep place with an injured foot tak-
ing olT his spring sideboot and throwing it up-
ward with all his strength in order that he
might attact some one to the hole at the bot-
tom of which he lay. It afterward appeared
that the day and hour coincided with the time
at which he was lost and it was the finding of
such a boot that ultimately led to the discovery
of his remains.
Love In St. Louts.
Impatient love has brought a man from San
Francisco to claim as his bride a lady who is
already a wife but whose husband is a way-
ward traveling man with a lover in every port.
She sued for divorce about three months ago
and sent word to an old flame that the little
word "yes" that he longed to hear four years
ago coulli now bc heard if he would come

not a second invitation and last week he got
leave of absence from the large saddlery firm
by which he is employed and came to St.
Louis. Without changing his apparel or
brushing the dust of States and Territories
from his coat he rushed to the abode of his
first love. A second more and he would have
gathered her to his manly bosom but she
waved him back.
"Not yet not yet" she murmured
