Mr.
ICrlenmeyer Rndcavors to Prove tlint
the Ancient Jews Were Left
lli.ndrd.
There Is a new problem for the Anglo-Ii-
raclilcs. Were the ancient Uebrewi a left-
handed people t Dr. Etlenmeycr has just
given an interesting and learned lecture to
prove (hat they were. Most of the Aryan
peoples as we know write from the left (o
(he tight of a sheet of paper and their books
are so piinted as (o read in (his direction.
Most of (he Semitic people on (he contrary
write from the riih( (o the left of the naner
Hitherto thi very emphatic diflerence has been
simply teprcientcd to be a mere characteristic
ol Habit kept up by (he reverence for tradition
winch u so deeply rooted tn the bemilic mind.
It has never occurred to nnv one. so lar as we
know that the direction taken by the hand ol
a Semitic scribe in writing was due (o a
physiological cause namely to (he fact that
his left hand was his better hand and .was
much more ready and "dexterous" than the
hand which we Aryans call (he dexter. Dr
Ktlcnmeyer insists that the writers of the Old
Testament and probably the early Talmudists
after them naturally wrote with their left
hands and would have found it difficult if
not impossible (o write with (he other hand.
Hence it was only natural that manuscript
should (ravel along a line whtcn started irom
the nelit and ended on the left. Dr. Lrlen
niever savs that this hypothesis is not a mere
hobby thought of his own but that he has
found striking confirmation of the theory in
the Talmud. For instance he cites a passage
which insists that certain special prayers and
inscriptions are always to be written with the
rich( hand and not the left. The execution
of this exceptional prescription was a work o
time patience and difficulty and it is implied
that the process ot writing with the right hand
was a departure irom the ordinary easy and
natural way of writing. The learned doctor
also cites passages from (he Hebrew of the
Old Testament in which a particular stress
seems to him to be laid upon the "lelt-hand
edness" of (he old Hebrews. Jacob and Job
ne sas preferred to give tne pre-eminent ben
ediction with the left hand instead of the richt
Jacob "knowingly and deliberately" laid
his left hand upon the head of his eldest
grandchild. We commend the question to
tne Anglo Israelites. 11 they can prove that
the majority of Englishmen are naturally
elt-hanued they win he in possession ol one
more "identity." In that case we may expect
tnem (0 write their letters nnd print (heir mac
azines in future after the proper Semitic
manner.
The Divided Nklrt.
When a lady has once arranged her ideas
as to the eternal fitness of the (hings which

fairly appreciated by (tie advocate at "ration'

shape size and outline of her raiment from
the waist downwards to any one ol the 1000
models which seem to her most becoming
