Dallas brick Isyers Ret $6 per day being
about the highest wsgei ever paid in Texas
for outdoor labor.
The Msrlio Bsll thinks that the Texas Ccn-
gressmsn who votes for Randall for Speaker
will not represent the sentiment of his con-
stituents. Till Washington Critic rtports 17 Republi-
can members of Congress in that city one day
last week who were.there for the purpose of
observing the workings of the civil service
law.
Mr. John Wanamakir has added one
more to his many benefactions to the Young
Men's Chriitian asiociation by giving the
Philadelphia association $50000 to pay off its
floating debt. The entire amount of the
debt $200000 was made up by other sub-
scribers. Thr buiineij of the Dominion of Canada
has rapidly Improved since the adoption of a
protective tariff. Agriculture manufactories
and mines have been greatly developed and
the laboring dasies receive better wages than
at any time previous to 187S while the de-
mand for both skilled and unskilled labor has
Increased.
On Tin local page will be found an item
regarding a descendant of David Crockett
who Is living in destitute circumstances in San
Antonio. Under any circumstances this lady
Is worthy of attention and care from the cily
and particularly so now In her hour of need
and the Light suggests that the proper steps
be taken at once to relieve her distress
Tin Cincinnati Times-Star thinks Darwin
died too soon and says 1 "Professor Ghcrke
of Williams college has discovered that the
Polsr bear is the ancestor of the English
German Russian and Scandinavian races
and of the American Indians. It is a pity the
great English naturalist passed away under
the false Impression that he descended from
monkey"
The recent decision of an Alabama Judge
that the Police Gaette it an Immoral and ob-
scene publication and fining its represents-
tive $1000 or 11 months In the chain gang is
a most righteous judgment R. K. Fox the
proprietor.wiil appeal the case to the Supreme
court and there is no doubt but what public
morals would be somewhat purer If the higher
court should affirm the decision made below.
Aj an Instance showing that there is at the
present time a great abundance of surplus
capital on WaU street it is stated that of the
$5000000 of bonds entitled to redemption
September 5 under the 121st call only a little
more than $1000000 were presented for pay-
ment.. This is explained by the fact that the
holders of the bonds seeing no satisfactory
chance for reinvestment of their fund 1 prefer
to let the money lie Idle In non-interest beat-
Ing securities rather than go to the trouble of
converting the bonds Into idle cash.
The Memphis Avalanche discoursing on
the prosperity of the South says ! "The fads
and figures of Southern growth and prosperity
set forth In the lit ol September Issues of the
leading Southern newspapers have attracted a
Eood deal of attention and comment In the
Nortb. Our neighbors across the line begin
to realise that the South touched bottom some
time ago and Is now on a rapidly ascending
scale. There Is no looking behind over the
devastating track of war. Forward Is the
word and the marvelous industrial riches
above and below Southern ground are In pro-
cess of development and the final results will
astonish the world."
The tiaitT has received the Initial number
of the American Journalist published monthly
al St. Louis Mo. R. P. Yoikston editor.
The object of the Journalist is to represent
the interests of the working writers of the
press throughout the land. The field is one
In which there has long been needed 11
true and original representative and I lie
Lioht knows ol no one man in all the coun-
try more fitted lor the position of editor of
such a publication than Mr. Yorkston. Ills
practical knowledge of the printing business
and his wide acquaintance with the newspaper
men will enable htm to make the American
Journalist what it purports to be and provide
in that publication a means of interchange of
opinion and opportunity for more general
acquaintance and the Light hopes for it
great success.
Hon. Thomas Ochiltrre has wtiltento.a
friend in Washington that he will sail from
Liverpool on the 22d int. and that he ex-
pects to be in Washington October 1. This
honorable Texal Representative could well
Inscribe upon his banner "venl vldl vlcl" as
the result of his sojourn In the capitals of
Lurope. lie has been petted and feted. Has
been the honored guest ol nobilily and of
moneyed aristocrats and everywhere has
been more warmly welcomed and showered
with attentions than almost any other citizen
of these great Americm States. No one who
is acquilnted with him will for a moment pre-
sume that these honors and attentions have
been given to him alone by reason of his
being a member of Congress from Texas. lie
is peculiarly one man among a million and
possesses much more ability than is popularly
accredited to him coupled with the great
charm ol good-fellowship good breeding and
lively wit. Tom is of Texas and lor Texas
and while he Is our representative in Con-
gress he Is also a representative man and fills
the position he occupies as a public man ably
and creditably and will always live like a
prince where others would starve like pau-
pers. "Jran Valjran" Dallas correspondent ol
the New Orleans Times-Democrat says : "I
see In your great September edition Governor
Ireland says he Intends calling an extra ses-
sion of our Legislature. We expected this
but this was his first announcement ol the
fact. That such a step Is necessary
Is obvious. Ami I was glad to read
he intends to urge a liberal appropri-
ation to have Texas properly repre-
sented at your exposition. It is but the wish
of all progressive men in the State that our
products be fully and grandly displayed on
that occasion. To do this requires money.
No individuals can afford to stand the ex-
pense and the State should do so. It will be
the greatest opportunity of a lifetime to illus-
trate Texas as It is before representative men
and women of the world. You may and we
may be certain Kansas will be there at full
length and very properly. We have an old
habit however of sending a raft of old fash-
ioned representatives lo Austin wilh old
ways and notions men who would look upon
such an expenditure of "Ihe people's money"
as downright folly and wrong. They cannot
be made to see that the people's lands and in-
dustries may thus be fourfold enhanced In
value; that their State will thus gain new citi-
zens and sources of wealth. But they may
act differently this time."
"Varro" the Washington correspondent
ofthe San Antonio Express sails into Tom
Ochiltree M. C with Democratic vim. He
charees that a triincular KeDubliean srmliVate
In Ihe southwest are bad very bad and then
drags (or tries to) Secretary Folger into the
arena because the people of the Seventh
Congressional district chose to elect a Repub-
lican Congressman after the Texas Legisla-
ture had patterned out a "truly loyal" Dem-
ocratic territory. This sly Democratic war
upon Federal officials under the guise of an
"Arkanslan M. C." and General Rosencrans
and Holman of Indiana the latter as the
bumper in the scheme is well concocted but
unfortunately the resurrection Is premature.
Ever since the "Red Headed Ranger" was
elected the entmy's guns have been firing an
alarm against such doings upon the border
for fear of a repetition ol the offense. This
was expected in a measure but now comes
the penny-a-liner Varro who exposes all the
hands but his own. Is this fair I Is it
honest! We opine not and call him to a
"show-down." Let him be specific; not
generalize and take such enlarged views. The
Express ought not to embarrass a triumvirate
of officios In the way It Joes by publishing a
communication written so lar from base (we
mean those attacked are so far from base). No
fair man would call forth in a year or two
afterwards another rejoinder against one who
had pasted to "that bourne Irom wlience no
traveler returns." This the Washington
correspondent well knew who maligned
Secretary Folger Brewster Plato et al
through the San Antonio Express and thus
shielded himself under the panoply of Demo-
cratic howling and personal Incredulity. The
election of Ochiltree has rankled and will
continue to rankle the Democracy. His ad-
herents ask only lair play and they propose to
have It.
