dono with fear and trembling on tho
part or the committee becauso It had rained

favorable for tho good weather necessary to

Sunday the cannon waa fired and the belle
rang again. Tho aspect of tho clouds wcro
then bad and a few drops or rain fell hut

around but tho weather was delightfully cool.
Crowds wore soon astir on tho streets which
were pleasantly decoratod with Hags bunting
Chinese lanterns and leat es. On San Antonio
street wcro two triumphal arches small it Is
truo but pretty and at tho festival grounds
was another triumphal arch through which
visitors entered. At 10 o'clock It waa arranged
that a memorial service should to held at tho
First 0rman Proteatint church on Seguln
s'rcot and tho quaint slmplo church was pret-
tily decorated for tho occasion. An arch of
green was erected In froutof Iheallarand pul-
pit. Inscribed "Faith Hope and Love" love
being tho keystone of the arch aa It was of

Cincinnati October 15. The Commercial
Gazette this morning publishes the figures
from every county except Slam showing that
the prohibition amendment has 309413 votes
while the total vote in the State was 709335
by which showing the amendment has been
defeated by 90509 votes.
Philadelphia October 15. The Hamp-
shire Manufacturing company limited manu-
facturers of cotton goods is repotted in finan-
cial difficulty. The assets are not ascertained
but the liabilities are estimated at $75000.
A judgment for $51000 has been conlessed.
Derlin October 15. Mr. Koch of the
German commission which went to l'gypt to
investigate Ihe cholera epidemic reports that
he has discovered that cholera Is due to a
living Ihtead like a microscopic organism
resembling that seen in cases of phthisic

that Ihe Chinese Admiral with two gunboats
has left Pak Hoi for Lung Mun near the
Tonqulo frontier to embark most the troops
there. The Admiral will return to Canton. It

abandoned.
Galveston October 15. It has been re-
solved by the City Council that a committee
composed of five members of the Council and
five citizens of Galveston shall be appointed
for the purpose of procuring the services on
behalf of the city of a civil engineer to make
sutveys plans and estimates for obtaining
deep water at this port.
Washington October 15. The lopping of
the wires of the Western Union Telegraph
company on Saturday by means of which
bogus dispatches were sent all over Ihe coun-
try announcing false results ol Ihe Jerome
park races and through which nearly $100000
was lost by pool sellers throughout the United
States remains as much of a mystery as ever.
Little Rock October 15. Considerable
excitement has just been created at Texar-
kana by Ihe filing of title deeds In the name
of Joseph 1'. and John C. Kitley to 241 acres
of land Including most of the land on which
the Arkansas side of Texarkana Is built. On
Saturday J. N. Smythee of Little Kock
went down and filed the deeds under an old
swamp land grant and It is understood that
suit for accession will toon begin.
Dublin October 15. Michael Davllt T.
M. Healy and T. Sullivan will attend the
league meeting at Kotlea county Formaugh
to-morrow. Large numbers of Orangemen
are en route to Koslea from all directions to
hold a meeting there at Ihe same time. The
government lias decided to permit both
meetings to be held but has sent a force of
cavalry Infantry and police ti preserve order.
St. Louis October 15. Governor Critten-
den and wife arrived here this morning from
Lexington Kentucky. He only stayed here
a short time leaving at 9 o'clock for Jefferson
City. He was questioned by reporters on the
gamblers' ring developments but declined to
say what he intended to do or vouchsafe any
explanation. He said however that he would
go before the present grand jury voluntarily
as a witness and had so notified the Circuit
Attorney.
Washing ton Ojtober 15. General Sher-
man hat selected Colonel Toutbloit and Col-
onel liacon at bit ttaff to remain with hltn at
St. Loult after being relieved from command
of Ihe army and until placed on the retired
list. General Poe of his staff will resume
hit duties In the engineer corps and General
Tedball another aidecanip hat been assigned
to the command of the artillery school at
Kortrett Monroe. General Sherman leavet
Washington to-morrow for Cleveland to at-
tend a reunion of the army.
Kansas Citv October 15. The Sixteenth
Annual convention of the conductors of the
United Statet and Canada opens here to-
morrow. A large number of conductori have
arrived and it it expected that between 300
and 400 will attend. On Saturday an excur-
lion will be made tojeave Leavenworth City
and fort and on Sunday morning a large
number will leave by special train for a trip
through Colorado going first to Denver and
returning by the Southern route to St. Loult
on the last of the month.
Uvalde October 15. Juttlce l'ulllam
held an inquest to-day on a German section
hand employed on the Sunset road about 75
miles from Uvalde. He wat ran over by the
east-bound express last night with Conduc-
tor Rodgcrt In charge in the neighborhood
of Spoflord junction. He died between Tur-
key creek and Uvalde while en route to San
Antonio. The deceased waa about 45 yeart
old five feet seven inches high and Identified
by papert upon him at Henry Dahl. He It
tuppoied to have fallen from the train while
stealing a ride.
Galveston October 15. To-day about
25 members of the Galveston Bar association
recommended Ihe Hon. W. II. Ilalllnger for
the vacant Judgeship in the Eastern district
