men robbed the vault of the eounljr treasury

urer and locked him In (he vault. The affair is
considered mysterious as $ooo of the
amount was silver too heavy to pack off.

a dispatch from the Mayor ol Savsnnsli ask-
ing for help to suppress the conflagration
Mayor May sent a slesm engine and two hose
carriages in charge ol the Chief of the depart-
ment with 30 men on a special train which
left for Savannah at 6 o'clock p. m
Caldwell. Iiuiio October 31. A ptiae
fight for $1000 a aide between McFadden a
Winnipeg man and Martland of Sl. Louli
took place to-day. It ended in the fourteenth
round Marland receiving punishment from
which it is thought he cannot recover. lie
was carried from the ilog insensible.

the underground railroad In London were the
work of th! Fenian Brotherhood of whose
movements he ia apprised. London would br

be expected every moment for it was now the
intention of thebrothethood to reduce England
to submission
City of Mxxico October 31. Orders have
been telegraphed to Scnor Cailoi Klvas the
Mexican Government's special agent in Lon
don to recommence the negoliationa with Ihe
Iltilish bnndholdera for a settlement of 'he
Mexican debt. His instructions will enable
him to overcome Ihe previous obstacles and lo
arrive at a satisfactory result. The cashier
who robbed the Merchants' bank of this city
has been arreslril in Havana his extradition
having been demanded. This is the first case
arising under the extradition treaty between
Mexico and Spain.
KlNOLAN'D ArkOctober 31. Last night a't
New Edinburg during Ihe after show or con-
cert of Hunter's great consolidated shows
some unknown parties from the outside fired
a volley of shots into the main exhibition can-
vas and then beat a hasty retreat in the dark-
nets escaping. Strange to tay only one
person was killed. The seats were crowded
and bullets passed through all sections of the
audience. Chalmon de Allenburg one of the
circus performers the contortionist was shot
through the head dying in the ting. The
citliena are determined to ferret out the assas-
sins and btirgthem to justice.
San Francisco October 31 The Pacific
mail steamer San Bias which arrived this
morning from Panama brought three cases of
yellow fever John Murphy cabin passenger
New York Francisco Perer Acapulco and
one Cooke. The two hat are reported dying
but Murphy is recovering. The vessel failed
to fly a yellow flag as the surgeon was igno-
rant that thcslckness was yellow fever. On
her way up ahe stopped at Acapulco Mazatian
and San Bias. No conrnunication was held
ith the latter place. The fever is atill racini?
there. At Mazatian she took thirty pasiengera
but got a clean bill of health. The first case
developed after leaving Acapulco. The well
passengers were traosterred to the steamer
China and the sick to the Honing hospital.
Savannah October 31. Slubbs' ware-
houie was burned at noon with 3000 bates of
cotton. It Is reported '.hat several persons
were burned lo death. A number of dwell-
ings were also destroyed. The fire broke out
in Garnet Slubbs & Co.'s warehouse at 12:30
this afternoon. The building of W. Joachin
and a mill on Indian and Kiver streets then
caught. The fire reached West Ilroad street
and Indian street. The electric light woiks
and Tynan's iron foundry are among the
principal places burned. Rice mills stores
and other properly oiuthe north side of Kiver
street were saved. Most of the houses de-
stroyed were wooden structures occupied by
poor people. It is impossible at this hour to
compile an accurate account of the losses but
they are put down at about $1000000.
Cincinnati October ii. Fourteen per-
sons in different families living in the western
part of the city have been attacked with
symptoms of poisoning. One child died to-
day and a number of others are severely ill.
It is thought that (lie poison was administered
in some way through food bought at a grocery.
Another discovery of gold has been made In
Cremone county Ohio about three miles
from the place worked for gold in 1869.
There is much excitement in the locality.
A Terre Haute Ind. special says : Fully
half the corn crops in the bottoms of the
Wabash river were ruined by the late freshet.
One farmer has 100000 bushels under water.
The river is at a stand to-night. George
Ruggles and Saiah Ruggtcs were drowned In
the old Wabash and Erie canal last night by
driving off the bridge which was moved out
of place -by the flood. Their father and
mother were In the wagon but escaped acd
their son had also reached the shore but was
drowned in Hying td rescue his sister.
London October 31 The excitement
over the explosions on the Underground rail-
way last evening is very great. A large num-
ber of policemen under special inspectors
were on duty all night at the various railway
stations guarding Ihe lines. Heavy forces
also watched the houses of Parliament and
other public buildings. The explosion at
Charing Cross occurred 200 yards west of the
station. No train was there at the time. The
walls of the tunnel were battered but Ihe rails
were not displaced. The windows of the sta-
tion were blown out but the root waa not
damaged. No one was hurt there. At Praed
atreet the force of the explosion was terrible.
Although men were busily engaged all night
in moving the dsbrii the task has not yet been
finished. The tunnel there was not destroyed
but a deep hole was excavated in the roadbed
tne duck woik was uiown out ana the gas
pipe and telegraph line were broken; the re-
freshment saloon was wrecked and the win-
dows of other rooms in Ihe station were
smashed. The eiplo.ion occurred immedi-
ately under the passenger train 40 yards west
of the station. All the persons injured were
In the last two carriages. Twenty-eight per-
sons who were wounded were taken to St.
Mary's hospital. Four of them are seriously
hurt but are expected to recover. The others
were unable to go to their homes during Ihe
night.
Galveston October 31. To-day Ellen
Hull wife of a Santa Fe brakemen while In
the chair of Dr. Edmuodson dentist while
under the influence of chloroform became
lifeless. Her mother was present at the time
and the drug was administered at their re-
quest The dentist is one of the most promt-
! nent here and notwithstanding Ihe verdict ol
' the jury is confident that death did not re
sult from chloroform. He will demand a post

declared off on account of the refusal of Ihe
railroad to give the rates announced.
The Union club has written a letter to Col-
onel Mansfield engineer in charge of the har-
bor improvement thanking him for his suc-
cessful endeavors for the benefit of the city
and State and proffering him the hospitality
of the club. The courtesy possesses unusual
Interest at this juncture when the Eads pro-
ject is being pushed.
