A Brief Description of the Diseases of the Bye Ear and Throat With
a few References of Remarkable Cures By Dr.
N. S. Burnham.
San Antonio long felt the need or a skillful specialist In treating dlwaies of the' F.ye Ear and
Throat Tholnhabltantsor alt this Immense State when requiring the services or suoh skill
were compelled to makolonjr Journeys to distant cities at groat expense such as Kansas City
Bt Loula and Chicago and still further Cast In order to obtain relief for diet-awe SOIctlng
theso organs and parts. '
Many or tho citizens nt this State who went to Kansas City for tho benefit of an oculists
skill taade the' acquaintance of the Oculist Aurlit and Laryng lat.
JDt. 1ST. S. Burnham
who had charge r tho KansasClty Mo.Eye RiraodlThroat Infirmary. They one and all
united In urging him to come to this point In Texas. Finally ralllng.health cautaJ by the
cold climate compelled a change and so 9n Antonio gained a specialist who was known by
some or her own citlaeos and msny In the State to puesess the .requitlto skill In all or Its
delicate and varied operations and treatment and since locatlag hero the greatest success hss
crowned his efforts and he has won the enduring gratitude of hundreds whom he has treaUd
fross all parts f the SUU. A f sw of them are given below as reftresM.
Catarrh.
A few remarks In resrard to this disease rasy not be out or place here as It Is so Ntnmoo.
Nearly all have the trouble at some tlmo In the acuts.form and call It a cold. Sometimes they
are aware they hardly get over ono cold until they haveanother. The cold; or more properly
apcaklng the catarrh then become aub-acute. By neglect this runs Into a rhronlo form.
Sometimes It Is located In the nose; sometimes the throat or both. Sooner or later.lt affects
tho ears causing frequent ringing or roarlna- In the ears or other nolsca. Sometimes violent
Inflamatlon cautlog eicructatlng pain and the aeuteneas or hesrtng Is 'lessened In a
greater or less degree. Very often too It extends up through a little duct from the nose to
oneortho otherand even botheyecaiillng several different form of dlsesses or the eye.
Nearly all are familiar with catarrh In the form or bronchitis.
Catarrh In all Its forms and nearly all Its stares can becurod. But poople neglect It and so
do physlc'ans. They neither prepare themselves with the Instruments or knowledge sufficient
or necessary to treat this troublesome disease as a rule and thus people themselves do not
apprehend tho danger they are In when they consult a physician and he tells them "Ol Its
nothing but a cold" and yet that so-called cold In a vast number or caves Is the first start or
deafness blindness loss of smell lossofvoloi or Laryngitis ilronchllls and Clniumptlon.
Any or several or these may follow and becausedbyaicglocted cold. Below area few names
which I have permission to use who have been treated by me with benedt for Catarrh In some
of Its forms since I have been located here t
J. F. Robinson Catarrh In throat San Antonio: T. B. Johnson Catarrh in throat. Manager
San Antonio Lionr; F. Kuhn Catarrh of the head. Denver Colorado; Miss Mary Frascr
Catarrh of tho throat and ears. Nova Scotia; Fraok Newton Catarrh or the throat and eyes
San Antonio; Miss K. Loundsbury Cstarrh of tho throat and head San Antonio.
Scores more might be added to this list that I have oured since located In this City but I will
only mention one more as a remarkablelnitanco or how much good can bo done that olasa or
Incurable ao-oalled Consumptives. O. W. Tye or Loon Springs had Catarrh ror soma years
In tho head and throat dually the lungs became affected and he had several haemorrhages and
had a very bad cough became much emaclatod and a confirmed Invalid and was pronounced
by his physician in the laat and Incurable etage or consumption. He camo to me ror treatment
last winter nearly a year ago. He commenced to gain tleah and went to work In the spring
and I saw no more of him until a few days ago when he came In bragglruy haw well he wa
and weight. thirty pounds more than he evsr did.
The Ears.
A few words now In regard to the car may not bo uninteresting to some especially those
who are sutTerers from varied and numerous forms or dlseaso. Very few people need urging
to consult an Aurlst when they hare a discharge of matter from It especially If accompanied
by a foul smell yet somo will and that too strange as It may sound In this dsyof enllght-
mcnt by advlco or physicians but surely It Is never dono by ono who understands diseases or
this organ.
It Is a lamentable ract that some or the older physicians (without any special knowledge on
this point) have a prcjudlco against the stoppago of purulent dlschsrarcs rrom the ear. but this
Is based upon the erroneous teachings or old French writers Du Verney and Itard. D. B. St.
John Roosa M.DLUD. Professor of Diseases or Eye and Ear In the University of New
1 oric city; surgeon of Manhattan Eye.and Ear Hospital; Consulting Surgeon or Brooklyn Eye
and Ear Iloipltal etc. and who Is considered the very boat authority on tho ebbject aays In bis
last work: "There Is no pathological experience on record which can sustain tho astertlon
that It'la dangerous to stop a discharge from tho
conaiaer wis ract mat there is. perhaps nopart
anatomical relations. Tho cavity of tho tympanaum Is oavered over by a thin bony plate
wnicn is in direct communication with tho cerebri! meninges; tho floor Is close to tho great
Juglor Its Internal wall Is tho labyrloth wall covered only by very thin membrane and open
ing into mo branches or the aoouttlo norvo while on the outsldo wo havo a thin membrane
about as thick as paper. It Is easy to see that a oontlnuous destruction of these parts by sup-
puration unless curod. In this part would soonoror later (which It always docal lead to serious
troubles In the brain and sometimes In tho lungsor heart I find a largo percentage of tho
coses having a "running ear" hare also a cough and when the ear Is cured the cough Is also
cured. Instead of being worse.
Then there Is another class of cases that sometimes consult the doctor ther mmnliin nt
ringing or roarlog or other noises In tho ear. He tells them they have cold and a doso of
qulnlno perhaps Is given this may be relieved for a time but sooner or later nxum. h
sufferer had his fears allayed by recovering partially from tho first attack and so docs not feel
anyanxletythlstlraeandtrlestheoldremesyagaln.lt falls and so does everything else they
try and their friends don't sympathize as there Is no externsl evidence of the suffering caused
by this condition but this at least causes thera to hunt up an Au rlst who examines the ear
and he finds the ear perhaps so far gone that It Is Impoulbh to restore its full hearing powers!
and he must have great skill Indeed to stop the oourso or the dlseaso and keen tho bearing
.iuui uuiug iu.. enure.; gu uruu loose oases
Ifpeople would go to the Aurlst every tlmo
not wait to consult puyslclaus and otho rs they would suffor far less and preserve their hearing
much better as neary all the dlsesses of this organ are curable etp cctally In tho flrat stages.
Space will only allow a few names for reference who have been cured of ear diseases hare by
me. Scores more m Ight be added :

Til Eye-
The diseases of the eye are very numcroui-nearlr SOO In number elearlv il.dn. a

vision. Yet nothing shows the folly ofgolngtothe general ohvslclan for treatment nf thla.
organ than the ract that he has only sufficiently
"-" y -u-.u. .... au u careiui application or properly selected
remedies to the and the different affections or the eye that tho superiority and tho success of
the Oculist consist.
Nearly all tho diseases of the eye are curable even In the severe rorms ir clearly understood
and properly treated and attended to In tho earlier stages bororo It has had time to destroy or
Injure permanently the vision. But those cases that show blemishes and deftots or vision and
blindness so frequently are cases In whloh there has been delay In seeking an Oculist and
valuable tlmo was wasted by trying somo domostlo remedies or what Is nearly as bad trying
the ordinary physician.
I do not mean by my remarks above to oondomn or crltlclso the general practitioner for
treating Catarrh or diseases or the Eye or Ear that ocour In his praotlce . It Is his duty to give
relief toall whoareaufferiog lnanyandevery way poaalble. and no doubt all do the best they
can. But they will all honestly confess that they havo not the means In the shape or solected
remedies Instrumcnta.aor the time to acquire the skill and praotlce to do Justice to these
cases.
