An Interesting Sermon Preached by Mr. Mitchell

A highly delectable sermon wns
preached nt tho Jlnptlst church Sunday

Slarshnll Texas the text of which wns
"Lovcst 'i'bou Me?" tnken from tho
breakfast conversntlon between Peter
nnd our Lord by tho side of Lake Tilic-
rias. The text of his sermon In thn
evening was '.'And Simeon took Htm up

Simeon Hist met Christ.
.Mr. Mitchell pleaches entirely extem-
poraneously; ho writes not n single note
mid Is olio of the most nnalvtic.il preach-
ers yet heal i! In the. city lie talks
about "The throbbing of the core of tho
henit of n man's most secret thought"

lays open it man's most secret thought
hut ho goes further; ho searches deeper
and eventually lays hare the Inner recess
the heart tho core or In other words
tho very cause from which this secret
thought arises. To many this nppears
somewhat Incomprehensible even super-
natural lint no there Is nothing un-
natural or supernatural about it.
Thought rending Is as yet a half opened
chest. It Is n science nnd Is bo regnrded
by scieutlllo men. llishop the thought
reader has astonished the scicntillc

Uesplto the Inclement weather nnd

keen appreciation of the good things of
this life by doing' ample justice to the

THE ALAMO.
Its Craduj' Dostrucllon Msjor French's Letter to
the Governor Concerning Its Protect'on
JInyor French this morning received a
letter from a person named Corteze Cox
In which she conveys to him the Intelli-
gence that It Is obvious to the eye how
tourists visiting the city cut oil und take
away with them pieces of the Alamo I s
mementoes of their visit here mid of the
glories of the past nnd In
time If nothing Is done to stop
such piracy this nnolcnt spot where our
forefnthers fought for their liberty will
present Indeed a sorry sight. Tho
Mayor has therefore written to the
Governor stating these facts and ask-
ing for something to bo dono for the
Alamo's protection. Tho city at ono
time did propose to buy It nnd wrote to
tho Legislature concerning such ar-
rangements. The Leclslature In re
ply purchased the Alamo but did no
further for It. Things have Indeed
come to n pass when n spot dyed with
the blood of liberty where stone and
grating nlcho and cornice speak In
mute but nnneallnir voices of those
who fought and died for home and coun-
try at great freedom's call should ho
desecrated. Now Is the moment for the
people of Sn Antonio to preserve and
guard this memory of a by-gono age re-
plete with glory and ni'maied with the
tongue or lame.

that t'me lias been granted him to tile

In this connection the Linux desires
to remark that Its object is to give facts
ns they really cx!stnnd to avoid under all
circumstances even tho appearance of
doing Injusiico to anyone. In view of
his fact we rcpilnt here the following
paragraph taken from onr Saturday's
cue :
'Colonel Plalo seemed to he In court
n. n great disadvantage und the testi-
mony of his own deputies as to any facts
In his favor was only elicited by hard
questioning on tho part of Colonel
Upson."
This Information ns Indeed nil we had

steadfastly the friends of Colonel Plato.
As an evidence of the fuct when the ver-
