Are We Having Hard Times ?
In answer to this query we dispatched
a gentleman (who was well acquainted
with all the business men of the Alamo
city) with Instructions to call upon the
most prominent firms of the city to as-
certain their opinions of the present
business and the prospects for fall trade.
Having visited nearly all of the repre-
sentative firms of this city our agent
tells us that there are many who coin-
plain and others who shake their heads
saying we cannot get cost for our goods.
Our agent says there are a number of
firms who are paying expenses and but
very few whoso profits show more than
expenses. Prominent among those
who are not at present losing
money we would mention J. jf.
Lmerson of No. 12 Soledad street.
1 n answer to our question of "Jlr. Emer-
son what Is your opinion recording San
Antonio and the prospect of a revival of
trade?" Mr. Emerson replied: "I am not
very well posted regarding any particu-
lar line of business but my ownandasa
pawnbroker I am free to confess that I
never saw the time when a dollar was
worth as much as It Is at present and
still 1 am not losing money because as
the times grow harder I advance less
money on all articles brought to me to
be left for loans and although I fre-
quently sell an article for less than half
the market price I still make a smull
margin on the same." Our agent here
naked "What articles do you advance
out" Jlr. li. replied: "Any thing such as
l usually taken by pawnbrokers such
its gold and sliver watches diamonds
household goods clothlog tools of all
kinds lire arms tewing machines musl-
oal goods boots and shoes clocks and a
thousand and other articles too numer-
ous to mention. From what we know
we Would recommend the people who
have no extra money to spare to call on
Mr. Emerton and our word for It tney
will be politely treated. Jf Mr. -Emerson
lias got the article they want they will
(are at least GO per cent ;

and after a careful survey or both fields
decided to locate at Dallas having
more confidence In that city's solid
substantial Improvement than In Fort
