The congregation of the Second Ilap-
1 1st church colored on South Centro
and Chestnut streets Fourth ward
were greatly exercised last .night by a
little disturbance created early In the
evening by one of tho riders ol the
church who calls himself a preacher
named Ucorge Goodloe. 'J lie case was
ventilated In police court this morning
and from the evidence adduced "llev."
Uoodloe was lined $7 by the Recorder
for being drunk and dliturblng the
peace.

exalted III tho ranks that he was given

an elder nearest the throne. He came

CITY POLITICAL POINTERS.
Tho Commltteo of One Hundred
and the Work to be Done.
I'.JIIor Fan Antonio Llnhtl
We had something to oppose In the
county election In the city election we
have something to propose" said a citi-
zen the other day In discussing tho
proposition to place the selection of
candidates for city olllces In the hnnds
of a committee of one hundred com
posed of Republicans nnd Democrats.
The expression put the situation exactly.
Something to oppose furnished n prac
tical rallying point; something to pro
pose ndmlta of argument.
The combination In our county elec
tion produced such good results I be
lieve In applying It to our city alliilrs"
remarked a speaker at the meeting of
the lirty Republicans.
The ambition to secure tbenomlnn-'
tlon of Mayor is llkily to wreck the for-
tunes of the movement.
To prevent disaster the committee of
100 would do well to consider the "dark
horse."
The Mayor and City Council control
olllclal patronage to the amount of $!)0-
(KX) per annum to appointive olllcers.
Would It not be well to cut this down In
the revision of the charter by restoring
nil city olllcers except the police to
election by the people.
Why continue the absurd provision of
electing a portion of the Aldermen an-
nually and why not have nil our Alder-
men elected nt the generalcity election?
If an alderman bus won the approval
of his constituency he will be re-elected
nnd this Is tho wny to test this question.
The method of leaving a mujorlty of the
old Council In olllce prevents the people
from effecting a chnnge of municipal
policy.
It's as easy to elect 12 nldennen as
four nnd It belnir but one legislative
body it is contrary to the spirit of our
government to prevent tue people ironi
renewing It entirely nt stated periods.
There is a happy medium between
short-sighted parsimony in city affairs
nnd extrnvngant expenditures.
While the nrosnect for cood times Is
not cheerful. It Is no reason why our
city should stand still.
We want a city administration to pull
us out 01 tne iniserauie ruts our present
ndmlnlstratlMi has fallen Into.
To go on as wo have been going on
win uringiusasier to our city
l'ronerty owners nro anxious to
vent Increased taxation but the mer-
chant who allows bis stock of goods to
run uown lor tear 01 extenuing nis credit
will have to close shon eventuallr.
Han Antonio must be made a olenn
henlthy city. Our dirt squares must be
Improved properly nnd made pleasant
to look upon. Our commercial streets
paved nnd n system of sewerage built.
It will cost money but to continue as
we uro now will cost human life and
eventually the good name and fortune of
pur town.
The cltv should own Its water work
and not let the water works own the
city.
The amount of money thrown Into
the mud every year would pay Interest
on an amount almost sulllclent to do all
this.
Wo want n cltv irovernment that can
quash this Idea. Can the hundred bring

How A Man Was Knocked Sense-
less on Accqula Street.
Two pnlnters named Wright and Dlx
nero before Police Justice Callaghan
this morning on a charge of being drunk
nnd disorderly last night on Acequla
street nearly opposite Story's stables.
Ollicer I'llhenry tcstlllcd that about 12
o'clock Inst night he heard that a man
had been knocked down on Aoequaa
street. He went around there and found
Dlx lying prostrate nnd bleeding from
his left eye. He had a friend with him
who said Dlx had been hit by some one
wltli a pair of brass knuckles. Dlx said
ho had fallen down. Ilolh so says the
ollicer were drunk. This morning Dlx
was dismissed and his friend was lined
$5 for belngdrunk and disorderly. Dlx
bnd a very black eye badly swollen and
bruised which certainly looked as If a
blow from a list had done the work. lie
told a I.Kinr reporter that he and his
friend Wright had been playing pool In
the While Elephant billiard room nnd n
young limn there who was dresseil
rather nobblly hail attracted his atten-
tenllon nnd he. Dlx. mnde fun of him by
Joking him nnd calling him n dude. Tho
two menus nnerwnrd stnrteil home and
ns they passed by the back alley on
Elephant's back entrance a man step-
leu out nnu struck nun one mow kiiock-

was his acuunlntnnce whom he had
called n dude. If so he was evidently n
very muscular dude nnd hit like a mule
