KNIGHTS OF LABOR.
Beginning of a Strike In Calvolton
Other Points.
ai.vr.siov AtiKtist27. The strike has j
at last reached Ualveston and to-day
took shape by the leaving almost In a
body of the entire laboring element of
the tlulf Colorado and Santa re railway.
The first symptoms of the strike were
manifested at 10 o'clock by the with-
drawal of carpenters and grensers. In
iiiltllng work this element or Iho Inher-
ing force stated that they had no griev-
ances and that they only withdrew In
conformity with thu order of the council
making the Wabash strike general on all
roads where there Is n just grievance.
Two hours and a half Inter all the re-
maining hands followed suit nlleglng
that the Santa Ke Is not paying as much
ns the illssourl l'aclllo lor the same
labor nnd that furthermore the em-
ployees of the road lime not been dealt
with honestly. When the Suntn Ko folks
went to make up n passenger train
which Is due to lenvo hero nt :t: 10 n. m.
they found the passenger coaches In the
shells hlookaded by n pair of trucks.
The strikers permitted the train men to
take out the mall car but refused to let
passenger coaches out. The managers
of the road summoned a squad of police
who rolled tho wheels out of the way
and the train was made up. The strik-
ers ottered no violent opposition In fact
did not manifest any ugliness Some
trouble was nntlclpaltd in gettlngnut
the freight trains this evening but the
feara proved groundless. In an Inter-
view with one of tho olllclnls of the
Mania Ke In authority ho contended
that the railway had alwnjK paid Just as
much wanes and tuorothan the Mlrsourl
lV-llic; Hint the lowest they have paid
for day labor has been S-1 . 1 against
which the Missouri I'aclllc has only
been paying $1 all summer. In conclu-
sion he said t lint vacancies were rapidly
being tilled nnd that the rond consider-
ing they had always regarded tho wants
of employees ns far as they thought Just
and right would not make any conces-
sions unless absolutely compelled to
which In view of the abundance of labor
was nut likely. On the other hand the
strikers are determined and sny they
will me rll means to Impede the tralllo
on tho rond until their reasonable de-
mands nro complied with.
Mr. Lams August 27. Thn situation
in Knights of Labor circles Is practical-
ly unchanged. The Wabjtsh commit lee
men say that everything depends upon
the Interview between the national ex-
ecutive committee nnd Ueneral Manager
Tnlmage and other Wnbnsh olllclnls. at
New ork this afternoon. Colonel Tnl-
muge's report asserting that men on the
Wabash road were not denied reinstate-
ment because they were Knights of La-
bor Is characterised as Incorrect by A.
U. Coughlln chairman of the Wabash
committee. He says that he has proof
to the contrary. The report that II
Knights employed In the ynrds of the
llrldge and Tunnel company were dis-
charged for refusing to hautllo Wabash
engines urone from the fact tfiat thn
men were suspended for refusing to
handle an engine belonging to the
Wabash but III use by tho bridge com-
pany as a switch engine. The llrldge
company claims that the engine Is prac-
tically their property for the tlmx being
nnd not a Wabash engine wnllethe
strikers hold the opposite view Nothing
has been ilono relative to the mutter by
the committee here but they hold it in
reserve pending developments In New

A Vivid Description of the Storm at
Charleston S C
Cnuii.tato.v M. C August X7-The
News nnd Courier publishes nn extended
Knrral retlew of the cyclone. It speaks
of tho warnings of the weather bureau
nnd the prognostications of old sailors
but says that nothing or the severity of
the storm experienced was looked for-
ward to oreven anticipated nfler II had
begun. At da) light Tuesday the wind
was blowing from the soulheait at a
rate of about M mile' nil hour with fre-
quent glials reaching to about 10 miles.
Tills Itself was nn unusual featitte as
most of thn cqillnoctlcnl gales In Charles-
ton slnrt from the northeast. At U
o'clock the wind was pretty lively. Tho
rain which during the night had fallen
In torrents had almost ceased. 'I he
streets were deserted save by tho Ice
wagons and milk dealers who had con-
siderable dllllculty dodging the living
slates bricks tiles nnd street signs
which were whirled about In every di-
rection. The account proceeds with a
description of the Increasing damage ns
the wind Increased stripping tho slnte
from tho roof of St. Michael's church
nnd other buildings nnd tilling the
streets with fulling bricks nnd other
missiles and proceeds:
'1 lie outlook was squally but nut un-
usually alarming but suddenly the
shingles on the roofs of various offices
and cotton sheds were rolled upward
scattered llku so tunny rolls of paper
nnd the vvnvea nngrlly dashed over the
pier heads and lundo mountains nnd vnl-
ieys In the river. The time nf the high
water was 7:211 n in. Kast llattery and
South llattery were prncllcully Impass-
able snvo by means of small boats. Hut
this wns not nil. The mountains of
wnves as they dahed against the sea
were caught up by the wind and tons of
water lilted Into the air and hurled
against Hie east fronts of tho handsome
buildings which lino the sidewalk
smashing In windows doors nnd fences
nnd Inundating the lawns and gardent.
'the flagstone promciindu of Kast llattery
was badly broken up the wnves selrlng
large Hags nnd pushing them oil' to the
opposite side of the street. Almost tile
entire railing was wnshed away and
many gaps were made In the
embankment. Tho damage to the
houses gardens and lawns on
this thoroughfnru wna serious. Not
more than two nr threo houses on either
thoroughfare esouped. Most of them
were unroofed eltherentlrely or In pnrt
and nil of them suflcred some damage.
The storm continued to Increase In vio-
lence ns the day advanced. The streets
were gradually tilled up with slates
bricks signs window shutters anil
sashes. At! 8 o'clock the rain began to
fall In torrents. The streets wcr
flooded nnd the drain pipes clinked up.
inc water ran inree leel tieep in almost
every street in the city. Thn rain was
accompanied by clap of thunder ut
short Intervals the noise of which
almost ueatlened In the roar or the
storm.
The storv proceeds to tell of the irrad-
ual iinroollmrorihe courthouse and then
of the lull of the sleeplu of the famous
