of the utter helplessness of the railway

war was developed last night when the
remaining employes together with
large crew 01 negroes sought to
rotect and send out a freight train.
Winchester rlflca and revolvers were de-
monstratively exhibited. The strikers
however deliberately went to work kill
ing the rrcignt engine as 11 it wus n leg-
itimate occupation one even going- so
far as to hang his lantern on tho barrel
of a Winchester of one of the lower offi
cials. After effectually disposing of all
freight engines at hand the strikers Held
a meeting and ueciueu not to inicriero

ting the mall and express cars go out on
passenger time schedules. No passen-

Before this latt r determination was
reached the noon passenger train was
uoarueu nt me snops oy strikers ami
taken to the depot after the passengers
were discharged. The train was
witched so that the passenger coaches
could be cut out without difficulty. All
this time the railroad authorities had
been passive. The strikers took posses-
sion of all the passenger engines cleaned
tnem up anu put mem in me round-

this service gratuitously. Fearing that

went mrougn unmoiesteu.
With a view to getting out a freight
train General Manager Snyder and

of 27 men dispatched to the scene. An

The police In the meantime were still
on the engine and were passive specta-
tors of the scene. This effectually set-
tied me business ine ponce ciaim

vent the destruction of property and
not to fight strikers who outnumbered
them 10 to I.
