It Is with a feeling of Intense sadness
I try to say a few words In regard to our
well-loved and honored citizen Ferd
Nlggll whoso earthly form wus borne
yesterday by loving hands to bis last
long home. Ills career as a man and an
officer Is too well known In Texas to
need any comment from trom me but I
will say what I know from mv own per
sonal knowledge In regard to his domes
tic relations in ine. a Kinder more
loving husband and father I have never
known; his was an Ideal marriage mated
to a gentle loving woman whom he
loved and who In return thought that
earth contained but one such man
blessed with a family of live
bright intelligent children of whom
he was happy and proud his heart was
naturally bound up In his home and
loved ones and all his energies were di-
rected to further their happiness and
pleasure. No one who witnessed the
painful parting of his wife and
live fatherless little ones can ever forget
their pitiful moans for their dead loved
one. His aged mother his numerous re
latives all helped to make a mournful
tableaux never to be forgotten. Words
fall me to express my sympathy for bis
bereaved family thus thnut upon the
world almost without warning. Mav
God bless and keep the widow and her
luineneBs nine ones. 3iay my gentle
friend llnd solace in the thought that
while her husband lived sbe was to him
all that a wife could be mid now though
the way seems dark and drear
the clouds will be rifted by and by and
ine memory oi tier ueau love will suine
over her pathway like the hallowed light
from n vestal shrlno. Ills funeral
was an ovation and tribute both from
high and low of honor and esteem for
nimseii anu nil alluded family.
Wreaths of immortelles are woven
Around thy well-loved name
The lleetlngyenrs may come and go
We'll love theo still tho same.
Farewell dear friend a long farewell
To us thou'rt ever dear
in memory we win oncn grieve
And drop for thee ft tear.

To-day unless the authorities say no
wo of the nation's foremost prize tight'
ers will face each other on Cincinnati's
trotting traok Maud S.'s training ground

will be between Domlnlck McCaffrey
and John L. Sullivan but In reality Mo'
Calfrey has no Idea of fighting the chain

ackers have no such Idea even If their
fresh young principal has.
in iaci. ii ii were certain inai suiuvan

for a match there would bo no matches
made at least with Sullivan. No sport-
ing man would bet a dollar on any one
of tho known lighters against the
miguty uostonian u mo lauer were sure
to toe the scratch with glistening eves
and lean and blooming checks. Hut lor
all that challenges are sent with the
hope that by the time of the next tight
the champion's digestion will be suffi
ciently wrecked to reduce him to the
proportions oi tue seconu ranx oi ngiu-
ers nnd then they may have an even
chance with him. That was what Mo-
Caffrey's backers If not MoCaflrey
hoped would be tho case now. The
Idea of McCaffrey being pitted against
niuuvan on even terms is preprosterous.
Take tbo former's nerforinance with Mit

hit oftener than ho had been hit. and
there wasn't a mark on him while
Mitchell s forehead was cut and his neck
and shirt were bloodr. Hut. on the
other hand the young Pittsbnrgber'
t'rengui was plainly going wnuejiutcn-
ell was about as stalwart as ever and it
was as plain ns uay mat in one or two
more rounds bo would come off victor.
And vet. when Mitchell had tried It
with Sullivan the latter stood blm on
his bead and battered him dowa to a
point or helplessness where Captain
Williams's sympathy welled up and
swent him off" the stago to anoint of
safety. Styles of lighting differ nnd a

to that other; but there Is no ground for
supposing inai nuuivan is not as mueu
superior to McCaffrey as he Is to all the

Sullivan's day for defeat may come
but from the reports of his condition It
doesn't seem probable that It will be to-
day. Meantime Cincinnati must for the
present drop the title of tho Queen City
