Last evening the tranquility of Com-
metce street was disturbed by a tre
mendous noise ns or sheets or metal
being lilt violently together. This was
discovered to emanate from the verandah
that runs from tho Western Union oillce
to Morris' store; by some means or other

Storm on the Lake.
CniCAOo September 23 A very heavy
northerly galo prevailed throughout the
entire lake region yesterday and last
night. Vessel masters who arrived dur
ing tuo night state mat tne storm was
a terrible one and tho sea running
blither than at any previous time this
season. Reports have been received of
lour schooners wrcckeu at various
points on Lake Michigan the crews be
Ing rescued In each case. Fears are felt
for the safety of numerous oilier vessels
known to be outside of port. Two un
known fishermen were washed from the

nalled them to return. They paid no
attention to his signal and bad pro-
ceeded about M yards when a tremen-
dous breaker lifted high over the pier

ance they would probably have been
lost but for the opportune arrival of the
