Vol.il,
Singing Convention.
The Star man had the pleasure
of attending Sunday's session of
the Stonewall County Singing-
Convention held at Shinery Lake
and must say it was a great suc-
cess both in point of attendance
and interest. Long before the
appointed hour for the exercises
to begin people conld be seen
wending their way from every
direction to one central point,
viz: Shinery Lake school house
and by the noon hour all
available space was covered with
vehicles of all kinds. Nor did
they cease to come at the noon
hour, but up to the middle of the
afternoon people continued to
come in. A splendid song service
was had in the forenoon at the
conclusion of which dinner was
announced and the visitors were
treated to a fine repast of tempt-
ing viands prepared by the good
ladies of Shinery Lake communi-
ty. While the afternoon services
were in progress it was whisper-
ed around that a wedding was
about to be pulled off at C. N.
Poore's residence and a$ a matter
of course there was a regular
stampede and all efforts to again
corral the crowd were useless,
and the exercises were soon
brought to a close. It was a
pleasant day well spent and long
to be remembered by those in
attendance.
Next meeting will be held at
Hooker, beginning Nov. 2Sth.
School Meeting.
As per request of Professor
S. W. Adams, principal of Asper-
mont school, nearly all of the
parents were present at the court
house Monday night to hear what
he had to to say relative to the
school work. In his address
Prof. Adams implored the co-
operation of the parents in the
work upon which he is about to
enter, showing in a very convinc-
ing way that such co-operation is
not only needed but is absolutely
necessary to the success of the
school. His remarks were well
chosen and we could just tell by
the expression of those present
that they are going to lend their
their effort to make this the best
term of school ever taught in our
town, and so may it be. At the
conclusion of his remarks others
were called on for an expression
of their views and among those
responding were Judge Arring-
ton, D. M. Oldham, Mr. Rich-
burg, D. R. Couch, and Mrs. S.
W. Adams, all of whom made
nice talks on the subject under
discussion and we verily believe
the evening was well spent—how
well we will know later on.
Gold in King County.
We have it from good authority
that a strata of gold has been
discovered in Farlev Sears' pas-
ture in King county. It is said
that in drilling for water this
strata was discovered when the
drillers had reached a depth of
110 feet. Dirt taken from the
well was sent to the government
assyist and was classed as running
S24 to the ton. This is pretty
good paying dirt. A shaft is
being sunk and the discovery
is being investigated with a view
to developing same.
You can't take advantage of
one of the positions which we
now have open, but you can be-
gin at once and prepare yourself
for the position which is guaran-
teed to you upon completion.

While the singing convention
was in full sway at Shinery Lake
Sunday U. T. Fowler and Miss
Hettie May Carlile took their
man}* friends by surprise by
announcing their intentions of
becoming man and wife. Ac-
cordingly the services of Rev.
E. B. Featherston was procured
and in a few short but well
chosen words they were pro-
nounced one in the flesh. Many
were the congratulations and
well wishes tendered the happy
young people. May they ever
be happy and prosperous is the
wish of the Star.
