Rusk Eagles Football - 2000
Eagles fall short in playoff bid, 21 to 13, to
/like Hall
Last Friday was a cold, damp,
nd disappointing night for the
tusk Eagles as they came up short
n their bid for the third and last
(layoff spot in district 20 AAA.
The Eagles had to win the last
hree games of the season to get
he playoff slot. After winning the
ist two weeks in a row over Pales-
tine Westwood
and Hunting-
ton they would
have to beat
the Center
Roughridersto
complete the
task. But, the
Roughriders
had something
to say about
that.
™The scoring
started at
0:40 in the first quarter when
\ldrian "Scooter" Carroll broke
pen with a 47 yard touchdown
un. Richard Ruiz added the PAT
illowing the Roughriders to take
he lead 7 - 0.
Center would score again in the
irst quarter with 1:50 to go, as
igain Carroll would show another
*eat piece of running, taking off
* a 75 yard score. Ruiz again
iddorl the extra point putting the
con1 at 14-0 in favor of Center.
■Most of the second quarter had
loth teams fighting a ground game
tnd the cold. The Eagles finally
>ut together a scoring drive with
iharlvin Denmon capping it on a
\ yard run into the endzone at 3:08
'eft in the first half. Akeem
P
Rusk Eagle Anthony Garner, #88, holds the football for a point-
after attempt as Akeem Leviston kicks the ball through the uprights.
Leviston added the PAT to cut the
Roughrider lead in half, making it
a 14 - 7 game.
The Center Roughriders would
drive the length of the field before
•the half, but the Eagles would end
any hopes of another score by Cen-
ter before half-time. Terraick Fore-
man intercepted a David Jeans

ran out.
The entire third quarter had both
teams struggling to move the ball
and score. The next score would
come in the fourth quarter with
10:24 to play in the game as
Center's David Jeans connected
with Aldrian Carroll on a 23 yard
touchdown pass. With Ruiz add-
ing the extra point, the
Roughriders would take a larger
lead with the score 21 to 7.
The Eagles would put up a val-
iant fight to come back in the game.
With only 1:47 left to play in the
game, Terriack Foreman would
score from 3 yards out. However,
this time, the PAT by Leviston
would sail wide right making a 21
• 13 game of it.
And that's the way it would end,
the game and the season for the
Rusk Eagles. Rusk ends up with a
3 and 7 record.
It has been my pleasure cover-
ing Eagle Football this season. My
hat is off to head coach Wayne
Mahaffey, all the coaches, and the
players. They played with class,
poise, and dignity despite some
difficult and disappointing losses.
Hold your heads up and be proud
to be Eagles. As the saying goes,
"all good things come to those who
wait" and your turn for good things
will happen.
Now let us prepare for Eagle
Roundball in 20 AAA action.
