Lieut. Col. Williams, of the Freedmen's Buread,
who in June last was dispatched upon a torn- of> .
inspection through the Stiiten of Arkansas and
Mississippi, reports extendedly, from St. Louis oí
bis operations under date of Aug. V). The main
fact of general interest contained therein is that
there is no lack of employment for tha B<i¿roeB at
twenty dollars per month formales, and fifteen
dollars per month for female^, with board.
A large number are engugcain cutting wood for
the yards along tho Misawsippi river, tor wnich
they are allowed considerable profit, the residue of-

tneir own face. Negroes who have lands for cul-
tivation are required to pay the satqe rent oa par-
ties do who apply directly to the Tre&sury Depart-

In one locality, tíiree freemen's school^, estab
lished in October last, with an attendance of 300
UdpilH, have been increased to five, with an attend-
ance of 500 scholars. The number of negroes re-
quiring support from the Government is reported
to be everywhere diminishing.
