New Orleans, March 14, 1*61.
Dear Sib :—After a somewhat long,
tedious, rough, Lut safe voyage from
Galveston on board the Loui iaiin,Cupt.
Tulbot, we reached tlio Cresceut City,
~-crucenl in shape rather than popula-
tion—on Wednesday last, about uoon
We found the weaihor exceedingly un-
pleasant for tho acaaon, old "Winter
iingoring in the lap of Spring," and of-
fering embrace! with his icy arms,
strong, cordial, but by no means warm
or endearing.
New Orleans still presents the as-
poet of a busy mart, with its much Cot-
ton, Sugar, Molasses, and other staple
products crowding and literally block-
ading her wharf# aa when, fivo weeks
ago, I embarked from her port for the
more sunny.ahores of Texas. Strangers
too, from every quarter of the globo,
comprising persons of all uges, sexes
and conditions in life, " from gravo to
gay, from lively to serene," and men
of "uuJiwun timgues," throng the streets
" from morn to noon, from noon to dusky
eve." The principal hotels of the city
present one grand panorama of Jho
beauty and chivalry of tho South, whilst
the " Orleans," the St. Charle , tire St.
Louis, Crisp's Gaiety, and other theatiTs
exhibit oacli consecutivo night, their
most attractive plays, performed by
world renowned actors, to admiring and
delighted audiences. Balls and partiop,
public and private, open and mask01',
enhance the fashion and gaiety of the
season, whilst manic with " its volup-
tuous swell" enchains and enchants
tho souses of tho pleasure seeker . 1
would-say something of the rich and
splendid bills that everywhere greet
the sight and tho appetite in this lux-
urious baiiqucting-liall of the great Mis-
sissippi Valley; bat It would seem
ciuel to Texians to tantalize their
palates with a portrayal of del¡«acies
as yet unattainable in their land of
prmniu. Out of sheer huináüity, there-
fore, I forbear to recapitulate the almost
innumerable, and imWacribnhlo delicious
artfefbs of food wherewith I have been
permitted to satiate tho cravings ol
the inner man sinco I arrived in the
city.
1 very much fear that (lie change of
weather has materially injurodjfonr very
forward crops in Texas. On my way
hither I fpent several days at -one of
the finest farms on tho Brazos bottom,
and found tho corn with several blades
on the infant stalk ^nd already a con-
siderable height. The cotton, too, was
up and growing rapidly, much of it
having been ploughed once. I am
afraid that my friend, Judge B. in his
laudublo desire to ontrtrip his fellow-
planters, has been a littlo too Industri-
ous this Spring and has overshot the
mark " Hasten slowly" 1 have found
a most excellent and safe maxim in my
own profession, and I doubt not it ap-
plies with equal efficacy to " those who
by tho plough would thrive." Since,

You have doubtless .seen tho compo-

I doubt not that most politicians will
think as I do, that its formation out of

tlie belief that with the samo rontorials,
