Only two persons in the town were
supposed evar to have had the dis-

both were attacked tu this epidemic
and one died); the whole platw as

plague. After lha existence of the
disease was fully acknowledged,
many of those who remained met
their fate heroically and did all they
could to alleviate the sufferings of
tha tick and dying.
Tha expert doctor returned and

tha material was mostly exhausted,
though there waa a few oases later
in the season, but few escaping. As
previously atated, Matagorda had
been long ihmoaa for good health,
but war. aai tha fruit# of war, were
here to he seen; there had been,
during the summer, some companies
of cavalry encamped ia the place

roboraliog; there bad beeu uo case
in the town of Indianola, where ihe
little girl had vitiled; she had oev
er beeu ou board the steamer, and
the only thing that rumor said she
bad touehed, was some fruit brought
from the vessel of which her reía
tivei obtained a portion in tbe town
oí lod'anola. Then ihe question
ducod into tbe town ef Indiunola
first? Wüy did not that immediate
family coott act it as well as she,
moreover, the steamer was visited by
other cilisens from Matagorda who
were liable to the disease, snd also
from the various towna of Victoria,
Lavaca and Taxana, and yet none
thought of, beard of, or contracted
the disease, nor did they have the
yellow fever in any of the lower
bay towns until some time after it
prevailed io Matagorda; then, Where
did the little girl contract the die*
ease? Sometime afterward it wat
reported that ihe steamer had buried
one or more of her crew on . her
voyage out from Havana; aa to my
owa opinion, after ramming up ell
the circumstances at the time aud
subsequently, I was forced to ihe
conclusion that she introduced the
disease into Matagorda, at the aame
time I waa never satisfied aa lo whan,
how, and where she contraotod it;
in one opinion I wu fully convinud,
that if quarantines oould be made
pe< foet, contagious aud int'ectious
persons could be excluded, and that
partial quariintinea are benefioial
just ao far as they are efficient; nl
w, had Matagorda bean in her won
tod healthy condition alte might
have eacaped the scourge, admitting
that it wu importad* aad we would
here conclude that all collections of
people, village*, towns and citie
have their aafmt reliance in avoid'
ing plagues ef all deecriptions in
keeping up satitarjr conditions. The
oourte of yellew fever thic season
sums to iadiute that no plaoe, no
difference in what climate, need flat-
ter itself that it may be exempt.—
While on the aubjeet of yellow fe<

seems to be a strange association at
times' between it and dengue, and
tbo decguo so often proceeds it that
it might be termed in popular phra*

as such might be taken as a warning,
