The Fourth of July was ushered in
by the discharge of artillery, under the di-
rection of the gentlemen at the foundry.—
in the day the boys of the late Wilke
battery, fired a number of rounds from the
handsome guns cast here by Messrs. Allen,
Griffiths k Co. The town boys, judging
from the discharges, fired everything from a
brass-barrel pistol to a Minie musket. Th e
negroes made a regular holiday affair of it,
gadding about, and seemed to be hugely sat-
isfied with, the proceedings. '1J
The stars and stripes were unfurled at one
or two places in town.
The Telegraph says: In reply to tip ques-
tion whether County Clerks and Probate Jud-
ges might continue to exercise their func-
tions as such, addressed to Maj. Gen. Gran-
ger, we have received the following :

TO THE PUBLIC.—I have prepared a Digest of the
Constitutions and Statutes of Texas, in lVircu,
with those repealed, as note under each amended or
substituted section; and also notis of the decisions of
the Supreme Ooarts of Texss, and of the United
States, (down to the time of publication) bearing upon
every section, repealed and in fjree, as to shaw
clearly, under proper alphabetical heads, analytically
and chronologically arranged, the laws in force, and
those npon which rights depond, or which have been
the subject of judicial decisions; so as to enablo tho
student, the bar, and the Courts, to consult, at a glance,
and in the same place, the old law, tbe mischief and
the remedy.
The plan of numbering the articles and tho notes,
so aa to have no repetitions, has been observed ; and
wherever there has been reference, by the Supreme
Court of Texas, or of the United States, to either the
Digest of Hartley vr Oldham tf White, their number-
ing will also be preserved, so as to render many
nlons intelligible, which will not be so, when these
to shall be no longer accessible.

emorace the Statutes of the United States, and such
of those of the " Confederate States" as will be of
use in the Courts of Toxaa. The work has been ex-
amined and approved by some of the best legal minds
of Texas. It will be all that yesrs of research and
careful noting, arranging and indexing could make It
