Writing them off
Linda Haynes in The McLean News
LIKE MOST OTHER businessmen. 1 go
through a January ritual each year that I don't
particularly enjoy...and that is writing off bad
debts.
Before I had experience in the business world. I
didn't realize that merchants had to go through
this routine. We look at our books in January and
decide which accounts we will probably never be
able to collect, and go through a bookkeeping
process of "writing them off."
I'm happy to say that most of the bad debts I was
forced to write off were out-of-town people. In our
experience the local people (with a few exceptions)
are good at paying what they owe.
I'm not sure how people justify not paying their
debts. I know that people sometimes have
problems and just can't pay for a while. However,
every business person I know would prefer for the
customer to come and tell him why he can't pay,
and perhaps pay a portion of the debt. Anything
would help!

when we reported in this column that the price of gasoline, itself
following the heels of the Reagan de-control order, had moved within
two cents of that bugaboo $1.50 per gallon price which we've been
hearing forecast ever since the panic of a couple of summers ago. We
spoke too soon.
On our next visit to the pump, last week-end. we found the price of
un-leaded had zoomed through that $1.50 benchmark and now
appears to be well along toward the two-dollar-a-gallon gasoline mark
the doomsayers have been predicting.
A prophet may be without honor in his own country, as the old
saying goes, but an oil company will not be without profit.
