THE DALLAS GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, founded in 1955, is the oldest organization of its kind in Texas. It is a
nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation.
OBJECTIVES AND GOALS:
* Create, foster and maintain interest in genealogy and family history.
* Raise standards of genealogical research through educational programs, workshops, and the publication of
data.
* Promote the collection and preservation of material relating to the early history of Dallas County and those
pioneers who settled the area.
* Copy, index and publish records, documents, inscriptions and other genealogical source materials.
* Support the Genealogy Section of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library.
* Stimulate the exchange of information between Society members and genealogical researchers across the
nation.
MEETINGS
DGS meetings are held on the fourth Monday (except December and May, third Monday) at 7:00 p.m. in the
auditorium of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, 1515 Young Street in downtown Dallas. Parking is available
under the building with access on Wood St. Visitors are always welcome. Social Time, 6:30-7:00 p.m., is before
each meeting in the West Room for getting to know fellow genealogists, checking out tapes, buying materials, and
refreshments.
DGS - COMPUTER INTEREST GROUP (DGS/CIG)
The DGS Computer Interest Group meets the second Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Library.
DGS/CIG holds a question/answer session one hour before each regular DGS meeting in the auditorium.
DGS - AFRICAN-AMERICAN INTEREST GROUP (DGS/AAIG)
The African-American Interest Group meets the third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Library.
DGS - PROFESSIONAL INTEREST GROUP (DGS/PIG)
The Professional Interest Group meets the fourth Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the West Room the Library. Social time
begins at 6:30 p.m.
Regular DGS Monthly Meetings and the Special-Interest Group Meetings are free and open to all. Visitors and
guests are welcome.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership is $20.00 per 12 month period beginning with receipt of dues. Members receive 10 issues of the DGS
Newsletter and the annual copy of the Dallas Journal. Members may also rent audio tapes from the DGS tape
library.
THE DGS NEWSLETTER is printed in ten issues and includes news, future event information, queries, library
acquisitions, and guides to resources at the Dallas Public Library. It is mailed to members, community leaders and
exchange societies. Queries are free to members; non-members should include $3.00 per query.
THE DALLAS JOURNAL was begun in 1995 to continue the tradition of excellence on an annual basis started by THE
DGS QUARTERLY published from 1955 to 1994. It includes sections devoted to genealogical research, special
features and articles of general interest.
EVENTS sponsored by DGS are the Lecture Series, Beginner Workshops, and Salt Lake City Trip. DGS is host in
September 1997 to the National Conference of the Federation of Genealogical Societies.
THE J. ERIK JONSSON LIBRARY has one of the best genealogical collections in the United States. The Society
recognizes its good fortune in having ready access. To maintain and improve that resource, the Society donates
money and service, and encourages its members to do likewise.
